People on here are crazy if they think Dazn paid approx $3.5bn without doing any due diligence of the existing contracts that Foxtel had, the profitability of Foxtel, the subscription tv landscape, the main competitors in the Australian market and what does and doesn't rate and are now panicking. They bought Foxtel with eyes wide open and it's not a shock to them as some on here are suggesting.

It’s not that they weren’t aware going in, it’s how they operate now they are running it. If they think they can bully the sports into taking less they will.

Im not saying they didn’t do the due diligence….
I’m saying they are stuck with this deal …

They might not be “panicking “ but I’m glad it’s their $3.5B and not mine though …

Wouldn't surprise me but at the same time its just a line said in passing by McGuire that doesn't really mean much. Unless there are some clauses, the AFL aren't going to renegotiate and DAZN can't breach the contract.
Chanel Seven did it to cricket. Started a court case, as a kind of Trumpy move, which then cricket, bent over backwards to appease them Seven Tv. Outcome favorable to Seven.

Yea but that was mostly based around conflicting schedules and loss of international players. Which is irrelevant for the AFL

Eddie McGuire mentioned it on his podcast today. Very interesting if true.

VERBATIM

McGuire: There is still nobody on the AFL Commission and nobody really on the AFL administration who has ever had to sell a ticket to fill a seat or to get a ratings point.

And the two biggest areas of our game are television -and going forward even more so because, you know, DAZN are lining up already to try and cut the AFL contract - I can give you that as an exclusive right now. They are already going "hang on paid too much for this" - and filling stadiums.

And Eddie was once the CEO of the Nine TV network, so he would have his ear to the powers that be. So some weight has to to be taken by this or what Eddie is saying. The point he makes looks correct, paying $418m pa with not enough revenue subscribers (they can tell numbers of watchers better than Tv ratings) as they have the digital subscribers to EXACTLY how many watch ANY program. So DANZ is saying we payed to much is really saying they are under OR the revenue they get from the AFL subscribers is less than then the $418m pa they pay!

No idea how they can make money on ptv deals in this country, for the population they are way overboard.

if the afl ptv deals in this is 418mill that would require over 1.5mill subscribers just to break even!

That's close enough figuring/numbers- makes no sense at all why they would pay that much

The days of Foxtel paying nrl unders to subsidise paying afl overs are gone

Afl will have to adjust its future spending accordingly

Meanwhile nrl hasn’t blown billions on vanity projects like the suns and giants

AFL still earns $300 mill a year more than nrl. Over life of gws that’s an extra $4 billion since gws entered. They can afford such projects!

Over the past 20 years afl has generated probably 2 billion more revenue than nrl

And yet in terms of net assets there’s only 100 million difference

Afl exaggerate revenue by showing all marvel as revenue rather than net profit

Nrl could show all revenue from gambaro vs profit it makes

Net assets is key. And it’s not like afl club finances or wages are better than nrl

Where’s it gone ?

just checked, in last 12 years its $3billion revenue difference.

Their marvel assets are massively understated, the land alone that marvel sits on would be worth a fortune.

its not exaggerating revenue, it’s return from an investment they made, in same way nrl is now including revenue from its investments.

like I said they can afford the investments they’ve made in expansion.

it’s gone to expansion. clubs, grassroots and HT entertainment at the gf lol

if we had $3bill extra we wouldn’t have had to wait this long for expansion.

3 billion

Lordy me that’s hilarious.

And nah the value of marvel has collapsed

Because of dictator dans covid stoppages their state debt is billions

They’ve whacked property with loads of new taxes and docklands was oversupplied anyway

Second hand units sales are all underwater

You would struggle to sell that land today for redevelopment given the state of the Victorian property market

Some poor people have held units in docklands for ten years and still lose over 200k

It was obvious Foxtel paid huge overs for the afl.
I’m sure the contract is watertight but next time they’ll be dealing with someone that isn’t keen for their product
Demonstrates both sides of the negotiating table had a personal affection for AFL. Genuine partners. Overpayment was an investment. Help to grow their game in NSW/QLD.

Never the same with NRL deals. Just hard-headed commercial reality.

In light of falls in FTA ratings, the AFL fans running Seven probably got stung worse than the AFL fans running Foxtel.

The issue for me is what they paid to buy Foxtel just a few months ago… if they lose the rights to the NRL , does that impact on the value of that asset? I believe it does…
Of course it does.

But if they lowball the NRL, our only option is Channel 9, who will also be a good spot knowing there is no competition.

Obviously they need someone else to bid against them to drive the price up…

The media said 9/Stan are going to right? Not that means anything until they do
