Sponsorship is a big chunk. Finals ticketing & corporates, for the NRL this includes Origin and internationals. The AFL gets membership revenue from its own 60,0000 AFL members (separate to the clubs) and receives attendance bonuses from the MCG. Theres signage, pourage, and the ever present gambling. And as already mentioned Marvel Stadium revenue (Axxcess memberships alone generate about 40m), and for the NRL its hotels etc.

The point he makes looks correct, paying $418m pa with not enough revenue subscribers (they can tell numbers of watchers better than Tv ratings) as they have the digital subscribers to EXACTLY how many watch ANY program. So DANZ is saying we payed to much is really saying they are under OR the revenue they get from the AFL subscribers is less than then the $418m pa they pay!

Lets not also forget it was Maguire who said only weeks ago that the fumbles have noone in their ranks who generates headlines for the game like PVL does, certainly not headlines that reverberate outside fumbles heartlands.

AFL still earns $300 mill a year more than nrl. Over life of gws that’s an extra $4 billion since gws entered. They can afford such projects!

No business thinks like that though... Oh we can afford to keep funding a project that is not only not hitting its targets but is going backwards at a rate of knots. That money could have been invested somewhere else to get anything but the zero return they've gotten in Western Sydney.

Also the first thing they teach you in investment is diversification

Putting all your money into hotels is a very risky strategy

Just like the afl having all their assets tied up in land at docklands when its value has collapsed. It’s going to take decades for that land to go back to where it was pre Covid

It's a bit hard to cut up a stadium so it's not located in one place.

Imagine the outcry in the NRL from the other clubs and their fans if they started handing out $6m a year more money to the likes of Wests and St George ..

Theyve also just bought Waverly Park, and own 49% of Champion data. Docklands - the stadium has depreciated in book value. However you spin it, the land is worth infinitely more than the $30m they paid for it, let alone the 225m in upgrades and improvements they have just completed.

The AFL got $60m for a 4000m2 block it owned next to Marvel in 2020. Just the turf area of Marvel Stadium is nearly 20,000m2. Theres also the matter of 2,500 car parking spaces under the venue that are used 7 days a week, not just on stadium days, the cost to build these again is prohibitive.

The AFL isnt going to sell Docklands any time soon. Theyve just signed a 30 year deal with the Vic Gov in 2018 - that amongst other things gives them another block of land in the CBD at a peppercorn rate with the right to buy it at the cost of the unimproved land if they wish

My point is that both leagues have way different funding models …

Some teams in the AFL get close to double others … it’s not exactly a level playing field coupled with other leg ups like increased salary caps and additional draft picks for some teams ..

It’s funny there are two extremes at work here …not much incentive in the AFL for some clubs to make better decisions, and the NRL is too tough on start out teams being treated the same as the others … probably the ideal is in the middle of..
