They will put a lowball bid for origin like they did last timeThey wouldn't love state of origin?!
The big mover will be Fox bidding for simulcast of origin with nine

Yeh shows how much Foxtel overpaid for the afl rights doesn’t itI wonder how many people are driven by nrl to subscribe? At $30 a month you’d need 1.2mill nrl subscribers to break even at a cost of $400mill a year as a streaming service, presuming advertising is covering production costs.
Unlike streaming, FTA is very profatable and the amount of people going to streaning has flatlined over the past 5 years. How does a FTA sitting in your lounge "deliver advertising to the correct audience"?
You are the only person in the world who thinks streaming will fail, and FTA will bounce back. Streaming will consolidate, sure but its not going away. FTA is in its heat death phase.
Why do you believe streamers don't have an algorithm capable of discerning this breakdown?
You know that FTA is just based on the ratings survey data?
So why is 9 proposing to put 2/3rds of its NRL coverage on streaming???Unlike streaming, FTA is very profatable and the amount of people going to streaning has flatlined over the past 5 years.
On an average night there are more people watching FTA than all the streamers combined.
Yep, FTA is defo on its "death bed" lol
In regards to whos watching, FTA have rating boxes that tell them the breakdowns of every demographic, have you every been on Tvtonight ? You can see the breakdown for every show. Streamers only know whos logged in, they dont know who in the house is watching, so every advert is aimed at whos logged in not whos watching. And thats assuming the person whos logged in gave thier correct info when signing up, i dont but im sure some ppl do.
FTA is the far more effective way for advertisers to reach thier target auidence.

Have you seen FTA ratings? They are in terminal decline. In the last 5 years FOX regularly matches and or outrates its FTA equivalent.
Channel 7 is broke, Channel 10 has gone broke several times over.
You are completely cooked if you think a table showing demographic breakdowns (derived from a survey) is some big revelation that streamers can't match.
Mate they have ACTUAL (not extrapolated surveys) data and can derive demo's from scraping all sorts of actual data from its users.
I feel ‘cooked’ just reading this threadThe original post i was answering was about FTA advertising revenue and FTA ratings.
Nothing specific to the NRL rights.
But your "cooked" if you think ratings are on a terminal decline and FTA is on its deathbed.

There’s so much wrong here I just can’t be bothered.Unlike streaming, FTA is very profatable and the amount of people going to streaning has flatlined over the past 5 years.

Yep, FTA is defo on its "death bed" . Its more accurate to say streaming as we know it is on its death bed. Actually, the fastest growing streaming service is FTA BVOD, numbers are increasing annually faster than any of the paid streamers.

FTA is the far more effective way for advertisers to reach thier target auidence. Unless its a generic product like KFC or Menu Log that doesnt care about age or sex, they can machine gun thier adverts over every platform.

I had to read that article 3 times and it still doesnt make sense, was it written by AI before AI became good ?Article from Dec 2024
Less than half of Australia's TV viewers watched FTA.
FTA continues its decline, down to 46% from 52% in 2023.
Online subscriptions services increased from 66 to 69%.
Maybe, having done the figures AND i think perth Red something like $520 cash for Seven ( already known $170m pa so by subtractionSeven then Foxtel/kayo pay $350m pa, Up appox $100m pa OR again pay/ get $350m pa. $170m equals $520 only for the two FTA and PAyTv . Currently we get something like $240-$250m pa from Foxtel. So if we can wrangle over a Hundred million increase it would be par with the AFL. Thats why we NEED two FTA, Nine and Ch10 as Nine will f*ck with us , like last time. Wouldn't even go over $115, while NRL asked for $130m pa after fruitless negotiations Nine would not buge, because they knew Seven was out of the loop. Still they say want NRL. What about this give them two gales like i outlined for Ch10 early Frday game on FTA and late Friday only on 7plus didto Sunday games. So Nine pay $140m and Seven $80M pa. What we need to best is the AFL $170m pa FTA TV , so we we get $220m pa when we combine $140 and $80m pa equals agin $220. With a $330 Foxtel gets us $550m pa with NZ/ and however small PNG, yet to come.Yeh shows how much Foxtel overpaid for the afl rights doesn’t it
It’s been quoted that Foxtel are paying afl 418 million paMaybe, having done the figures AND i think perth Red something like $520 cash for Seven ( already known $170m pa so by subtractionSeven then Foxtel/kayo pay $350m pa, Up appox $100m pa OR again pay/ get $350m pa. $170m equals $520 only for the two FTA and PAyTv . To beat the AFL deal we need as many pay TV /streamers and FTA that want to come on board.
If that is so they did pay over- big time, they will know exactly how many subscribers watch their game. So I guess they will want to UNDERS to us. Thats why we want a increase but also bring another (and or more) PayTv Streamers. With two FTA we will be able to get what we deserve. It’s been quoted that Foxtel are paying afl 418 million pa
What do you think a ratings box is? (if not a tool for survey)I had to read that article 3 times and it still doesnt make sense, was it written by AI before AI became good ?
The article doesnt include FTA BVOD numbers or streaming, in 2025 there as many people watching BVOD as there are watching Netflix or Youtube
So basically, in 2023 streaming increased 3% and FTA ( not including BVOD or streaming ) decreased 6%
The article doesnt mention the % of people watching FTA v Streaming. Its about 70% FTA all others combined 30%
the % of total minutes viewed are
FTA 60%
Netflix 8.5%
FTA BVOD 8%
Youtube 7.9%
Dinsney+ 2.5%
Amazon 2%
All others combined 10.3%
So, there you go. FTA is far from dead, its actually the leader by a very wide margian.
To answer your Q from earlier, No, FTA dont compile thier ratings data from a survey, they use Oztam ratings boxes.

An Oztam ratings box is a far more accurate way of measuring whos watching than anything streamers have. What do you think a ratings box is? (if not a tool for survey)
Do you think FTA at 60% in your article, is a some sort of long term trend? And not a sign of a significant decline.
Why do you think streaming will be "gone" (your words) not mine?
