I’ve now read 3 separate articles in Nine publications trying to take gloss off Vegas and talk up union. This off the back of Today show planing on doing a segment with a junior afl team in Brisbane on the eve of nrl rd 1 kicking off before the nrl complained & got it canned. Interesting strategy for a network trying to keep the rights. The entitled merkins will never change, they don’t respect the nrl, they think they do us a favour by broadcasting it - and then do the cheapest tackiest production possible. Time to kick them to the kerb.
I noticed most of the negative articles were coming from them.

It's definitely sus.

EXCLUSIVE: The NRL is poised to fast-track broadcast rights negotiations and plans to announce a new deal within the next three months.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys made the shock reveal as the game’s latest Las Vegas venture played out in front of more than 45,000 fans – plus a roomful of TV and streaming suitors.

While the established rugby league broadcasters were out in force, including Foxtel and Nine, V’landys claimed the level of interest in NRL content was now at unprecedented heights.
“Anyone who says we can’t globalise this game is a nark,” he said

“Every broadcaster is here at the moment, upstairs in the VIP area. You’ve got all the streamers. We’ve got Amazon, Paramount, and others. There are more here than people know. More than we’ve ever had before.

“All of them are showing interest. I expected that would happen but not at this level.”

On the presence of billionaire Sir Len Blavatnik, the power behind Foxtel owner DAZN, he said: “He realises how important rugby league is … he’s here as one of our special guests.”

The current NRL broadcast rights
agreement is worth about $2bn”.

V’landys hopes the next five-year instalment will be worth close to double.
“I’ve never seen the game wanted so much by so many broadcasters,” he said.

“We’re in the greatest position we’ve ever been in. I feel like getting a little auctioneer’s box and auctioning it off upstairs tonight.”

But V’landys was adamant the NRL would not put on blinkers and just dash for cash.

The impact on fans would be forefront in considerations, he promised, especially if options to carve up and distribute the rights through various platforms emerged.
“We don’t want to be doing anything that makes the game unaffordable for our fans,” he said.

“It’s vital that they can always subscribe.”
And with that, V’landys was gone. There were, clearly, more talks to be had.”

Interesting they repeat the 800 millions year figure

The figure to beat afl is 590 million and that’s pretty much locked in

Timing negotiations for right after Vegas is smart too

Laing was in that meeting, working for Nine. She’s as just tough as V’landys at the negotiation table, according to those who have seen her in action. She’ll need to be if the game’s free-to-air broadcaster since 1993 is to remain so as speculation swirls about a strained relationship between Nine and V’landys.
The chairman believes recent negative coverage in the Sydney Morning Herald (which Nine owns) about racing governance has been about influencing broadcast talks.
“That’s what I’ve been told by some credible people,” V’landys told The Australian in an interview last week. “I don’t know if it’s true or not, but that’s what I’ve been told.
“I’m not going to deny what has been stated to me. If they’re doing that, they’re really stupid because that just makes me more determined. I will go like a bulldozer in getting the best deal for rugby league. So they’re wasting their time if they are.”

Well that explains everything.

Yeah I was coming on here to post that I keep on reading $800m, read all the back-posts and it`s everywhere, can we put this down with V`landys repeated claim that there would be a record crowd today...and there was.
$800m would be game-over for other codes in our region.

The one factor we are all forgetting about the NRL at the moment as we talk up how well the game is doing, is that all the savvy businesspeople who run these broadcast companies would not only be looking at the game but very, very importantly at the bloke who is running it.
He`s the ace up our sleeve, who wouldn`t want to put a bet on him, they`d all be looking at him and his record in League and Racing and be thinking....mmmm....this bloke is a winner, how far can he go.
