@Pippen94 if what you quoted about the English super league deal being worth 100 million pounds according to that English journo and the nrl keeping 50 million pounds then maybe that figure of 800 million a year isn’t total bs

I just can’t see the super league tv deal being worth four times its current value just bc of Pvl

I don’t see why he doesn’t do a tv deal now with a clause saying how much extra they get for super league then go to super league later with the cash in hand to do a deal

You're confused how a global recession could effect a multi billion dollar dollar deal with a global broadcaster ?
Did you sleep though 2008 ?
If only hed sigend a decent 7 year deal 5 years ago!

In all likelihood the 'war' will have little impact on Australian viewers tv habits and everyone will still keep paying for their streaming subscriptions and $8 lattes.

It wont, if it can land 40-50mill pound its an outstanding achievement. The english Union comp just landed a 40million pound a year deal up from 31 million pound.
In all likelihood SL for PTV will land at around 30-35 million pound, hopefully!

I’m hoping it doesn’t go backwards … again ! It’s the only sporting deal on the planet that makes PVLs last deal look good

It's not my rumour. Martyn Sadler who is anti NRL is one saying it. I imagine he's close to club. I will say NRL branded / owned superleague is more valuable. Will do things like global round and promote harder than superleague bosses today. Gives product with reach into Europe markets not just Australia and New Zealand. If dazn wants NRL just for this market maybe it's worth their interest paying for superleague if will get them NRL? It's just a rumour tho..

It's bundle. You're looking at it like it's just superleague separately.

I am confused, can someone explain to me if this Trump, USD, Yuan, oil talk means that PVL will get a good or bad broadcast deal given this is the "Next TV deal discussion 2028" thread?
The overall macro environment can go two ways. During the GFC and also Covid, “entertainment” actually got a bounce as the theory is people don’t have the money (or ability, in Covid’s case) to go outside.

I think this is a bit different though. The tv industry is probably 70-80% of the way through a huge upheaval, with the endpoint probably visible in the next 5 years. A lot of investment went in and we are now at the consolidation phase. Consolidation is not generally good for entertainment. The macro economic environment probably won’t help that as we are at the deflating the balloon stage regardless.

Also for someone like DAZN, they need money. Saudi were one route to that and Saudi are now expected to pull back from some investments.

They cant be too broke if they just paid way overs for Foxtel …. Might not prove to be a good investment if they lose the NRL right ?

With the extra game each week it makes sense for that to be in the most valuable time slot for tv which is Monday night

Saturday 930 and Sunday 7 pm just aren’t as valuable

Fox would pay loads for an extra exclusive game on a new night or they could take a bit less and allow none or seven to also show it to grow the game

They seem to have gone quiet on less rounds which would’ve killed the value of the tv deal

That can wait for future deals when money isn’t so critical as it is now

Stand alone mnf games also sees a spike in pre and post game coverage over normal shows too so big ratings for 3 hours plus

Re mnf and turn around for games players can suck it up

If they want massive money they need to be flexible

“Advertising on commercial television has taken a hit in recent times and the impact is being felt on the Nine Network’s coverage of rugby league.
Sport Confidential can reveal that some of the biggest names on Nine’s NRL coverage have been asked to take pay cuts or had their deals revised as the network looks to reduce costs.
It is understood that the likes of Bulldogs head of football Phil Gould and Brisbane Broncos legend Darren Lockyer were among those who were broached over their deals.
Revelations of cost cutting come at a crucial time for the network as they fight to retain the broadcasting rights beyond next season.
Nine’s rival the Seven Network are believed to be making a concerted bid to secure a slice of the rights - it has been rumoured that they are keen to revive Monday night football and poach State of Origin.
They have shown their commitment to the game by kicking off their own show - Agenda Setters - on a Monday night.“

Channel seven getting Monday night footy and origin would be massive for the sport

They should share the rights with Foxtel which should be worth 100 million pa in total between the two

Locky doesn’t need the money!

if Nine are slashing costs now, just imagine how shit the coverage will get if they are forced to pay more for the rights. It’s honestly terrifying just how bad the broadcast could get on Nine considering they haven’t even paid for a decent game caller during the current rights deal! Maybe instead they could cut all their AFL shows & AFL panelists to save costs, you know, since they don’t even have the rights to the sport!

9 could get better, having actual trained media people rather than multiple ex-players who signed on as a TPA
