So you consider ChatGPT a reliable information source? I asked it which is Australia's number one football code and this was the response:

There isn’t a single, clear “number one” football code across all of Australia—it depends on how you measure popularity (attendance, TV ratings, participation, or regional support). But overall, Australian Football League (AFL)—the top level of Australian rules football—is generally considered the dominant football code nationally.

I don’t get too hung up on which code is objectively considered bigger in Australia …even Chat GPT doesn’t sound real confident

I prefer the trend of one over the other though …

I mean …the Rugby League World also extends beyond Australian shores

Do sadelaide get local car dealers advertising during the footy? You really don’t think regional markets get the same national hilux ads as Syd & Brisbane?
Yes, but only because there's a Toyota dealership everywhere. Toyota doesn't need to spend more to outcompete car brands that are do not have a dealership in a regional town (with a regional broadcast), whereas the 5 major media markets have car dealerships of every brand in the cities.

Rather than guessing or larping, some us actually use Census data regularly.

Do you all see that Newcastle Median Weekly household income is $1676.
Adelaide is $1548.

Even going further out into the Hunter Valley, the median is still higher.

Newcastle is richer per capita than Adelaide.
I got it wrong mate. I'll admit to that.

Still, the 70% of Big 5 media market Australia would generally be more than the 30% regional, if not the case of Newcastle and Adelaide. Compare Brisbane's $1,849 weekly household income to Townsville's $1,717 for example.

And the market data advertisers are working with much more useful than census data.

There's insiders and insiders mate. I've worked with NRL teams specifically w.r.t sponsorship, not the NRL and how it would organise its media right deals, which I have little clue but still take an interest in. But I'm still more "insider" and expert regarding how sports work with media, the public and revenue raising than most here.
You say you know the Kayo subscriber survey data that shows the subscribers that are driven by AFL, NRL or both.

Can you name who does it?

I've had it told to me in person, in the course of my job, that Kayo considers NRL and AFL subscriber base to be worth roughly about equally as much to it. It's hearsay, I understand, so you don't have to believe me. Which is only just common sense. Both are roughly equally as popular TV sports as each other.

You're the one that said you work with the census data. I took those photos before you wrote your contraction.

Do you mean Townsville that is richer per capita than Adelaide too?

That doesn't necessarily mean the people who own the homes live in Newcastle.

I want to ask you a question …why is the Perth newspaper so shit scared about the new Rugby League team that they now refuse to mention it ? Imagine if we did that in Sydney to the Giants ..how much you lot would be crying 😢

So it's second hand information from a person who got it from an unnamed source.

You can prove this easily. Just ask that person where they got that info from. I can tell you if they're bullshitting you or not. Would you like to know the truth or just what you choose to believe?

other sports are o shown on nine and they cover those
The print media is very traditional and doesn't allocate space to sports it considers as niche in its target market. The AFL pays for guaranteed coverage in The Daily Telegraph for instance. If the NRL want coverage in the West Australian, PVL will need to open his chequebook.

And Kayo has far greater penetration among AFL fans in Melbourne than outside Melbourne, because non-Victorian teams get all their games broadcast in their local market on Channel 7.

Which is why Channel 7 pay more than Channel 9.

Which is why the AFL currently has a bigger media rights deal. Kayo/Fox/Dazn call whatever you want to call it pay similar amounts, but the free to air broadcasters pay different.

Of course, this is not literally true - I'm generalising.

I expect NRL to get more from both a FTA and Streaming provider for the next deal, and more overall, for the reasons talked about in this thread. If the streamer is the same owner as the FTA (10/Paramount, 9/Stan), we might not actually truly know how the value of the deal divides up between the FTA and streaming element.

This isn't exactly right. The corporate culture of The West Australian being owned by Channel 7 is very pro-AFL. The corporate culture of News Limited, despite what either NRL or AFL people will tell you one way or another (like people arguing over which of NRL or AFL appears earlier on a drop down menu of news.com.au, like come on, this does not make more than the tiniest of differences), is pretty balanced between the two sports.

Nothing to do with being niche. It's pure pettiness. Last year Origin had 190,000 people watching in Perth and the next day they had an article saying that the Fremantle game was the real State of Origin.

They cover the soccer and Rugby Union which is more niche … I suspect PVL to just get his buddies at News Ltd to retaliate by pulling the pin on the Giants … the Swans will be happy because they hate the Giants more than the NRL clubs which are just indifferent to them
