So the NRL are going to give up a FTA game and settle for about $150mil more then the last deal. Yea nah, those figures are bullshit.

So did Murdoch claim Smith's scalp? "It certainly would have come from Rupert," one source told AFR Weekend. "It was delivered via Julian Clarke [the CEO of News Corp Australia] and the message was 'There will be no deal on the rights if we have to deal with Dave Smith.'"

If this is true every commisioner needs to be sacked instantly. I am actually hoping Smith announces an amazing new job soon so we can feel that he left due to a better offer, not becasue we once again dropped to our knees to appease News Ltd.

Smith was going this year anyway, he was probably always leaving after the tv deal.

Could've sworn I've heard him say in an interview that he saw his appointment as a long term deal.

There's no doubt imo that he left earlier than he intended, as to why (sick of the constant headlines/bullying, pushed by commission or something else) I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

What makes you so confident in that?

Because there were plenty of stories throughout the year suggesting it was his last year, it was also suggested as part of the reason for the tv negotiations starting a year early. I think he always intended to get the tv deals done by the end of the year and move on but knew he would be waiting around two years before News were forced back to the table and didn't want to stick around. Change agents generally don't hang around long and I do believe that was why he was appointed.

So nothing more than speculation, as said he mentioned numerous times he had no plan to quit. The job is half done, not many ceo's like to walk away when only half of their work is done in my experience.

Why do you think he kept getting asked the question?

It's not ideal, but he's never been the only one working on the rights. The job was as done as it can be with him as ceo, short of hanging around in a job for years longer than he ever anticipated waiting for fox to return to the negotiating table.

I was talking about the nrl reforms as much as the TV deal. We've still got a long way to go on the structure of the game, richos whole of game review implementation, expansion, club sustainability etc. I'd hardly say job done in terms of modernising the sport for the next 20 years ahead.

Do you honestly think that corporate business people, who likely have been involved in tougher negotiations with much more hard to deal with people, would be that bothered by one Dave Smiths' terms, so much to the point of throwing their toys out of the cot and demanding that he leave?

No action the commission has made since it's inception has been to the advantage of News Ltd. If anything they've done the opposite.

*Gallop was supposed to have a contract that guaranteed he be CEO for 5 years at least. Pfft, lasted a few months before Grant literally walked him out the door.

*Bent News over in the last TV rights negotiations and got them to let go of the first and last rights agreement and still sucked a billion dollars out of the deal.

*Told Fox that they would be negotiating the FTA component separately and not as a package. (i.e. got rid of Fox's two highest rating time slots for NRL, Monday and Saturday night)

Those are things that actually matter to News.

Do you honestly think that all of a sudden, the commissioners have lost their balls and are suddenly willing to appease News Corp?

Well in that context the 'job' is never done, Smith established a stronger base for the next guy, which was what he was appointed to do.

I mean come on. Just look at the damn quote;

"There will be no deal on the rights if we have to deal with Dave Smith."

There is absolutely no f**king way that they're going to give up a deal that is worth billions to Fox just because they don't like dealing with someone. Kim Williams lost his job because he lost the first and last rights clause for News in the last negotiation despite still getting the rights. Imagine what would happen to Julian Clarke if he lost the rights because someone is tough to deal with.

Honestly it comes across that you just don't like the commission or Smith because Perth didn't get developmental officers that were apparently promised and you're bitter towards Australian Rugby League because Perth doesn't have an NRL team already.

Everyone is very quick to remark upon how the uptake of new viewing methods IPTV etc., is very swift.

But I doubt it will be so much for clubs because it will require them to substantially upgrade their technology infrastucture.

Also, a crowd of drinking patrons would get pretty rowdy if their is a buffering swish on the big screens.

It just gives the impression that Fox have a distinct advantage because so many people connect with the game through these venues.

I watch NFL live in HD on ESPN on a Fetch TV set top box. Why couldn't a club or pub do the same? No buffering, no drop outs. It comes with the Optus service for about $10 a month.

Those AFR article numbers on the value of the rights are BS. For a start getting every game live on fox would.be at least $1b in itself, obviously the nine deal will reduce as contracted if it happens but by a third seems extreme.

They have said $600m and $700m, if that were the case the comssioners would be signing there own death warrants. Smith took the bullet for pissing off fox, i now expect foxtel to pay market value and not unders as they did in the era of first and last rights.

I exect the final value to be $1.8b or so over 5 years, whichcould be more depending on digital and NZ rights

Yahoo will broadcast first free global live stream of NFL game

'The first NFL game to be globally streamed live, for free, over the Internet will be on Yahoo.com.

The Buffalo Bills-Jacksonville Jaguars game on Oct. 25 in London will be streamed for free to anyone with a device and an Internet connection on Yahoo, which has more than one billion monthly users between Yahoo, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Screen and Tumblr. The game will start at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time.

"We're thrilled that the NFL has chosen Yahoo for this historic opportunity,” said Marissa Mayer, president and CEO of Yahoo. “It marks a significant change in the way users can access this amazing content. The NFL and Yahoo have both long engaged football fans around the world. Our partnership provides the ultimate football experience – with digital availability, designed for the modern fan.”

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football is back: Sign up for a league today!]

This experiment could be an important one for the NFL. The game will still be broadcast in the Buffalo and Jacksonville markets, but the league has never gone outside of its television partners to broadcast a game.

"The NFL has always been committed to being at the forefront of media innovation. Through this partnership with Yahoo – one of the world’s most recognizable digital brands – we are taking another important step in that direction as we continue to closely monitor the rapidly evolving digital media landscape,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

When the NFL decided in March that the Bills-Jaguars game would be streamed worldwide on a digital platform, it was a bold move. The NFL's rise in popularity and its immense profits can be tied to its history with television. But with the world moving toward watching shows and events on tablets and smartphones, it makes sense for the NFL to start to move in that direction too. It will be interesting to see where this experiment leads in terms of the NFL's broadcasting strategy.

The game itself is between two teams trying to make it back to the playoffs for the first time in years. The Bills have the longest playoff drought in the NFL, dating to the 1999 season, but are coming off a promising 9-7 season and have a new coach in Rex Ryan and a huge addition in running back LeSean McCoy. The Jaguars are trying to turn a corner after seven straight seasons without a playoff appearance, and second-year quarterback Blake Bortles is the centerpiece of their rebuilding effort.'

Thought this was interesting in the context of whats happening with this discussion. I saw this on CNBC tv, the commentary from the anchor was around why the broadcasters would allow this, not sure who the analyst was but he basically he said that the CEO of the NFL would be telling his current broadcasters this is the future, and pay up or we'll sell our rights elsewhere.

Its as if he has just taken $25m off for simulcasting and then divided the remaining $160m by the 4 FTA slots to determine the value of saturday's. Which is stupid because not only has he forgotten that origin is worth probably $30m, but each slot is not worth the same, thursday's are the most valuable & saturday's are the least valuable.

Remember those back page exclusives by rothfield that had no monday night football, an NRL channel & allegedly worth 1.7bn? reduce Nine's commitment by the simulcasting & no saturday game and give or take that's what fox should be paying.

Just for fun;

Sat $25m pa
Simulcasting $25m pa

Leaves Nine paying $135m pa/ $675m & foxsports paying $205m pa/ $1.025bn = $340m pa/ $1.7bn + digital & NZ rights = $400m pa/ $2bn

Per game basis;
Nine $135m - $30m origin - $25m finals series = $80m/72 games = $1.1m per game
Fox $205m - $25m simulcasting = $180m/120 games = $1.5m per game (reduce slightly with Nines, WCC, dallym etc)

Throw expansion in and we get even more!

News Corp don't get to pay less for hurt feelings.

I think your being overly conservative. Considering that NRL is the Fox number 1 sport, they are getting simulcasting, if they get the Saturday game back and not forgetting the deal that was done with the AFL which has now set the benchmark for pay TV rights the Fox figure should be substantially higher.

Throw in expansion and International rights and the deal should blow the AFL one out of the water.

It's based solely on the 1.7bn figure rothfield wrote before the shit hit the fan, demonstrating that if they get saturday back that's the starting point, based on their own leak.
