NFT - Disney: better now or then

Although the Disney Pixar films are great, I think Disney has been better than it is now.

I like most of the old cartoons and movies, but my favourites are the cartoons made when I was little - The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin etc. I think that was Disney at its best.

I liked Mulan and Tarzan, those were probably the last Disney (pixar excluded) films that I really enjoyed. Why do they always have to make these stupid sequels? Talk about killing it.

Pochahontas 2 and 3, Mulan 2, Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas, Jungle Book 2...why do they do it? Surely they can't be making that much money out of those? It's a shame to make such crap sequels when the first ones were good.

What do you think?

All the classic Disney films are better than the ones that came out in the 80's onwards.

Who could forget Fantasia, Cinderella, Snow White, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Bambi and The Jungle Book, to name but a few.

I am in total agreement with you princessjen. I'm not a great fan of the Pixar films although I do like them.

The Lion King is sensational and so is Beaty and the Beast. I've been meaning to see Mulan but haven't got around to it yet.

I like the old ones too. All the ones Gene mentioned are great. But... they bring out sequels decades later.

I always hated fantasia though

gene how could you go past beauty and the beast. surely that would be up there. i'd have to say that's the best disney film

I've never seen Beauty and The Beast or most of the other newer ones. They never appealed to me. I forgot Robin Hood and The Sword In The Stone.

I suppose that will change when Jake gets older!

you should see it. they are really good. the really new ones aren't, but the ones made in the early 90's/ late 80's were good

Yeah id have to agree with Astro, The Lion King is a great movie. Ive seen the live show too and it was excelent. Other than that though, id say the recent Disney movies have been pretty average. Whether its the storylines, my own ageing, or just that times are changing and what was great formula 20 years ago, no longer works today, who knows...

Some of the recent Disney films I think are still good. But I think kids just would rather go to the movies to see a computer animated film nowadays, which is sad because hand animation is still great if done right.

Not great movies by any means, they are aimed at children, but I like Atlantis, Emporers New Groove, and Lilo and Stitch.

I love most of the new Disney movies. Just a big kid at heart. But i think the best disney movies are the really old ones like Mary Poppins, Snow White and Cinderella. Of the more recent movies i love The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Monsters Inc.

The older films are so gender biased that most modern kids have trouble relating. Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty....they spent most of their time waiting for "Prince Charming" to arrive.

In the more modern films, Beauty, Jasmine, etc, had a bit more spirit and independence. A change of times, a change of view.

The workmanship in the older films was fantastic though. The hand drawn, hand painted films had so much more depth than the computer generated ones. I remember the first time I saw "The Jungle Book" and thinking that the water looked wet. Sounds silly, but some of you out there know what I mean.

For content, the more modern films are better, but artistically, the older films win hands down.

YES! I think there is more skill in hand drawn cartoons than in computered ones... not that I don't like Toy Story and that, because I do. But I love The Lion King, not just because it is a great story and there just so cute... but because the animation is just fantasitc.
You can tell from watching the ones like Robin Hood, and Snow White how much animation and Disney has come along.

I love Disney, however they have to explain why they feel the need to have to kill off the mothers.... Nemo, Fox and the Hound, Bambi... what the hell is that all about, I still cry when Mufusa dies.

My fave from Robin Hood is Prince John sucking this thumb

As for the sequels it gives the Australian company sonething to do. Most of them are made here.

they are still poor. its not the animation, its the storylines. no one really wants to know what happens after the happy ending, because how exciting can that be?

as for killing off the mums, i cry every time. fox and the hound is extremely heart wreching IMO
