The NSW HSC seems to put everything down to one exam (per subject) at the end of 2 years. In Qld, our OP's are calculated using the assessment that we have completed within our school throughout Year 12 and some of Year 11.

We are then ranked within our subjects in our school and then throughout the state. We sit the QCS Test (Queensland Core Skills Test), which consists of 2 MC (multiple choice) exams, 1 extended writing exam and 1 short answer exam. This "test" doesn't even have that much bearing on our results. It is more to separate students that are closely ranked and for an overall view of the school's results. (Only 7 students (including me) from my school got an "A".)

I think this is a fairer system (albeit the most complicated), as each school has taught different modules and aspects of subjects. To have standardised state-wide exams is just plain wrong.

Wow... like astrogirl, I never thought that I'd have that much to say about the HSC system. Another case of verbal diarrhoea.

You get a exam, an assesment and the HSC mark which is an average between the other two so its not all dependent on how you go in the HSC exams.

The results aren't just based on the one exam for each subject... it also takes into account results of other things throughout the year (I couldn't tell you what or how exactly, it's all changed since I did it).

As for the UAI, I was dissappointed with mine when I did it a few years ago, but the only time I ever needed it since was to get into Uni, which I managed to get into the course that I wanted to do anyway.

And if you don't want to go to Uni, then it's basically pointless in getting one...

Actually Axie, the correct formal English spelling (not that "US English" rubbish) is diarrhoea. Just like encyclopaedia and paediatrician.

I stand corrected, thanks funky_pineapple.

I did my HSC last year and got a UAI of 92.5, was very happy at the time but this year I found out at uni HSC means very little.

The NSW HSC relies heavily on the exam because its the only thing that can be used to access all students. The difficulty level of assessments will vary across schools. The assessment mark is based on the exam mark but how it works is the students assessment ranking is used to allocate their assessment marks.

Its abit difficult to explain but for example there is 5 students in 2 unit IT for Newcastle high school, to make things easier we'll make those 5 students northey, astrogirl, axie, tigermite and funky_p. Over the year assessment marks are collected from assignments, class tests and yearly exam, and at the end astrogirl is ranked first in the class with a mark of 72%, and Northey is ranked second with 70% with not much of a standard deviation across the board. Now that the assessments are finished lets move on to the final exam. Feeling cocky Astrogirl fails to utilise her stuvac effectively and decides to go clubbing instead of study however northey studies her but off and end up with an aligned HSC score in IT of 92 and Astrogirl only has an aligned mark of only 85. Now what happens is Astrogirl will get Northey's exam mark as her assessment mark because she was ranked 1st in assessments and Northey's mark was the highest in the class for the final exam.

effectively Astrogirl will be given
Exam mark-85
assessment mark 92
overall mark-88.5, rounded up to 89

Northey will be given
exam mark-92
assessment mark of probably 90
overall mark-91

hope I didn't confuse too many people.

Generally speaking that's how I understood the process to have worked 9 years ago when I got my HSC - I guess that side of things hasn't changed much.

Funny about AD's scenario - for me it was actually the other way around! Generally speaking I actually kicked butt in the exams compared to the assessments so some lucky sod got the benefit of my exam marks, for their assessments!

The HSC has a few flaws in the whole system. My cousin got all in the 70's. Most of them were just general subject but she was doing extension english and etension something else. She got a UAI in the 40's because of the poor results of other peope in her school. whats up with that?

In Qld we get OP's. On a scale of 1 (the best) - 25 (the worst). I got a 10 which I think is equivalent to an UAI of 88. That was 2 years ago though. I could've done better, I was just too lazy.
Oh god I am getting so worked up over my qcs next year. My parents set me very high standards, and pretty much If I don't get anything higher than a 3-4 for my op, they will kill me, coz I'm trying to get into uq to do laws or IT. I just hope I don't choke on the tests.
Congratulations on your 10.

Calm down... I found the QCS fairly challenging and I got an A. UQ is such a stuffy rigid university. (No offence to anyone that goes there.) If you wanna do law and IT, have a look at Griffith (my uni). It's flexible, contemporary and 100% of our law graduates gain employment. I don't care what the stuck up preppies at UQ say... our uni is great.

When I did my HSC, I took a number of courses of varying difficulty:
4 Unit Advanced English
Drama
Information Technology
Information Processes
Ancient History

That totalled twelve units, of which ten would count towards my UAI. In my exams I scored between 81 and 89 for every course, but my best course (Drama, with an overall of 89 including assessment) wasn't included because, once marks were compared with my class, it was revealed it was a particularly 'dumb' group. So my worst mark went in ahead of my best. The system's weird, but in a way, it makes sense. Different teachers have different classes, and what might be a 19/20 in a Glen Innes classroom might only be worthy of a 14/20 in an expensive Sydney private school.
