Listening to some of my mp3's, and I got a thinkin' about the greatest Aussie songs ever... It's a hard task to come up with a top 10.

10) Screaming Jets - October Grey
9) Men At Work - Down Under (Scottish, but an Aussie song :))
8) Paul Kelly - Dumb Things
7) Redgum - I Was Only 19 (A Walk In The Light Green)
6) Powderfinger - My Happiness
5) Hunters And Collectors - Throw Your Arms Around Me
4) Midnight Oil - Power And The Passion
3) Acca Dacca - You Shook Me All Night Long
2) Cold Chisel - Khe Sahn
1) Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over (i'm well aware these guys are Kiwi's, but think of them as adopted sons... They can have Derryn Hynch back, we'll keep Neil Finn :D)

Other honorable mentions:

INXS - Never Tear Us Apart, John Williamson - Hey True Blue, Tommy Emmanuel - The Journey, Daddy Cool - Eagle Rock, Mental As Anything - The Nips Are Getting Bigger, Silverchair - Tomorrow, Jebediah - Harpoon, Ice House - Great Southern Land, The Living End - All Torn Down, Something For Kate - Deja Vu, John Butler Trio - Betterman, Grinspoon - Black Friday, The Whitlams - Blow Up The Pokies... Geez, There's a lot of good Aussie music :)

What do you guys think? Try to keep it to 1 song per artist.

I'm not sure I can name 10. But here are some of my thoughts:

Live It Up, Mental as Anything - one of my all time favourites.

Don't Dream It's Over, Crowded House - agree with you there bluesbreaker, but yeah they are Kiwi.

Amazing, Alex Lloyd - I loved this song even before it was played at the Olympic stadium after won the Grand Final - it was awesome.

Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Jet - I think this song will have longevity and be one of the Aussie greats.

Berlin Chair - You Am I
Blubber Boy - Regurgitator
Better Get A Lawyer - The Cruel Sea

Crowded House are predominately Australian (2 out of 3 members) but they would be nothing without the kiwi, so surely they cant count. Better Be Home Soon is a better song for mine though...

Are You Gonna Be My Girl will be the best Australian song of this decade - Jet are gonna be huge everywhere...

I was watching Channel V this morning. Apparently Jet will be playing live at VHQ on Saturday. Not sure how tickets for V things work though.

Really?!?

I thought I saw the word "free" somewhere, but I didn't realise the concept existed anymore! :D

Agree with 'Amazing' and 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl', both of them are pretty unique in sound and will be around for a while.

I prefer 'Helping Hand' by The Screaming Jets, and would probably go with 'Soldiers' by You Am I over 'Berlin Chair'. Khe Sanh is an awesome song as well.

Other songs:
- Leaving Home by Jebediah
- You Are Not My Friend by Frenzal Rhomb
- Gravity by The Superjesus
- No Aphrodesiac by The Whitlams (Has to be in any list really)
- Just Ace by Grinspoon

I agree. Neil was the only Kiwi in the group (well except when his brother Tim was in the line up) But the others were Aussies

Hey Samwise, some great bands there but only a couple maybe so far could lay claim to songs that maybe considered for greatesest oz songs of all time.
*You am I- Berlin Chair.
*INXS, even though I was never a big fan, can appreciate how good they were.
*Icehouse. widely regarded as a bit of a joke but I really liked their first couple of albums.
*Grinspoon-Champion
*AC/DC-any of there early stuff, before the formula got tired.
*Midnight Oil-Beds are Burning
Recent favourites would have to be Jet, Hilltop Hoods and Butterfingers for mixing great sounds with witty lyrics that make me laugh.

Hey Astrogirl I think there maybe a concert of Jet's being shown on ABC this Friday. I'll keep an ear out and let you now for sure.

Bluesbreaker, love the Clapton photo. do you think he bought the SG to go with the shirt or visa-versa. Very cool shot though.

Samwise- didn't expect to see any other Zephyr Timbre fans around. I got to see them live at my University last year, and it was a real treat. They've got a great sound. Just wish my Uni would get them back down here.

Anyone familiar with/like The Butterfly Effect?
