Nicholson hits a $50,000 six
January 17, 2004

MATTHEW NICHOLSON thrilled a big Telstra Stadium crowd with a $50,000 hit, but NSW failed to fully capitalise on some promising starts in their ING Cup day-night cricket match against Queensland.

NSW were dismissed for 246 off the final ball of their 50-over innings.

Nicholson struck an advertising sign on the western side of the ground as he lifted a delivery from spinner Nathan Hauritz over deep mid-wicket.

He became only the second player this season to hit the lucrative target after South Australia's Graham Manou, who achieved the feat twice.

NSW officials said the prizemoney would go into a team prize pool to be divvied up at the end of the season with Nicholson earning the major share.

Officials reported a crowd of over 24,000 shortly before the Blues' innings ended.

Most of the Blues' star batters were guilty of failing to build on a promising start.

Skipper Steve Waugh scored 48 off 72 balls, Simon Katich 46 off 59, and Mark Waugh 37 off 31.

Openers Phil Jaques (19 off 29) and Dominic Thornely (30 off 49) put on 50 in just over 11 overs before falling to catches by Bulls debutant Craig Philipson off paceman Ashley Noffke (2-27 off 10 overs).

Noffke applied the brake to the NSW innings as Katich and Steve Waugh struggled early on in their third-wicket stand of 97 off 120 balls.

In one nine-over period, the pair added just 20 runs with Waugh failing to score for 12 deliveries.

Both men eventually blossomed, each scoring five boundaries with Katich adding a six.

The Blues were given a helping hand by wayward Bulls paceman Damian MacKenzie, who gifted them 13 extra deliveries through bowling six no-balls and seven wides.

Well-placed at 2-151 in the 33rd over, NSW subsequently lost wickets at regular intervals.

Hauritz (4-52 off 10 overs) chewed through the bottom half of the order, though Mark Waugh and Nicholson, who smashed two sixes in his innings of 25 off 22 balls boosted the total in the latter overs.

Another one hits the sign. Thats 3 or 4 this season. They've almost double the total of signs hit since its inception.

I bet they are glad that they reduced the prize money this season

I was at the match. Nicholson's shot looked like it was going to clear it, and then it dipped right towards the end, and hit the sweet spot. And there were a few catches taken in the crowd too, so ING had a fair bit to pay out last night. I reckon that they will reduce the number of signs next season, maybe just reduce it to one square of the wicket, instead of the two that are there at the moment.

It was a good match, even though it had it's dull periods. Posting 245 was a competitve total, considering that our run rate at one stage was around 3 and a bit. Everyone seemed to get a start, but just couldn't get on with it. Nicholson provided some entertainment towards the end, with 3 sixes in 25.

I thought that we had the Bulls when they were 8 down with still a few to get, but they managed to get them. I thought that our bowlers did quite well, Nicholson and Bracken came back in the latter stages after being smashed around earlier by Law and Maher, and our spinners kept it tight in the main.

It was actually quite a good atmosphere... I think cricket has a future at Telstra Stadium. The square boundaries are quite short, so high scoring games should always occur. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a VB Series match there within the next 5 years...

The "customer safety" officers (or fun police) were out in action again last night, confiscating beach balls and dismantling beer snakes. Bet they slept safely last night knowing that no one got their eye poked out by a stray ball or snake...
