I always guessed that Ch 9 did that because they thought either League would catch on and raise the value of the rights or they wouldnt and alienate themselves from the Victorian market. I think going after the Tennis suggests they are very aware of their market appeal in Melbourne.

Just a guess though.

Refusing to air it on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon for so many years in Melbourne, purely to make overtures to the. AFL is a very deliberate attempt to prevent growth of the game. Of course it would never rate at 1am.

Livepass doesn’t stream straight to a TV. In the next rights deal I can see Stan getting a few games.
It's in house rights and revenue though. Very simple to allow streaming to a television or demand a real premium for Stan to take that over as well.

I was living in Melbourne when that shit was going on and it was a f**ken disgrace how AwFL and Nein continually conspired to put the NRL on after 12:30-1am. Pretty sure it was a Gallop led NRL, so that sock puppet jellyfish merkin wasn’t about to do us any favours.

As it usually turns out, RL fans are a resilient bunch. The Melbourne Based Dragons Supporters Club was born and a travelling group of Saints supporters sustained ourselves by watching Imparja feeds from Darwin at accommodating pubs and good times ensued.

I pulled a few decent roots from going to MBDS games too. I’ve said too much...

Where does the time go...

And perth, remember the “use it or lose it” threat, what a joke!

Yep, attended plenty of MBDS events myself tbh, as well as League of Our Own.

I also hammered 9 relentlessly about it. Any pub that showed imparja especially (and foxtel to a lesser extent) for those years basically had a licence to print money

Was down there for SOO3 in 2011. Telecast of the game didn't start until 9pm local time (9:30pm AEST) so had to turn off my phone so I didn't get any notifications on social media or messages off my QLD supporting mates.

Luckily the Sat night after Melbourne played the Dogs at Adelaide Oval so I got my live footy fix.

When i was a teenager it would be aired at midnight. I'd do everything i could to avoid the score. Then when i would turn the tv on for the scheduled time the news would be running late and would show images of the victorious team.
Every. f**king. Time.

Yep happened to me for the 2003 grand final aswell. Saw the result on the news an hour before the telecast started.
