I've seen my fair share of Mighty Duck films, and watch the occassional FIFA World Cup Final.
And while some dislike it, IMO nothing makes an epic event like a Penalty Shootout for all the marbles.
Just the Goalie vs 5 of the most lethal scorers on the team.
This morning's Euro Cup got me thinking - what is the Rugby League equivalent? Something that will have the whole stadium holding their breath for. Something that utilises core Rugby League skills, takes the idiots with the whistle out of the equation, and allows heroes to rise, and villains to fall.
And then it hit me. Something every kid has played in the school yard at some stage.
The 'Run it straight challenge'.
5 of the best ball runners from each team, line up individually against the Fullback. The attacker starts on the center of the 40m line, the defender center of the goal line. The attacker taps the ball, and it's on. Will he run it straight? Will he put on a step, or a fend? Maybe he'll chip and chase (kicks are allowed before the 30m line BTW)? How about the old dummy to no-one?
It would make epic television. And just imagine the hysteria if little 55kg Reece Walsh, eye-liner and all, managed to stop a rampaging Billy Kikau to win the NRL Premiership? I know I'd be changing the name of my kid to Reece if that was the case, and I'm a Panthers fan, and only have daughters.
Please don't move this to The Cave. This is a serious suggestion.
