ESPN have just bought the football rights though. No comment yet about other sports. Plus they are gonna charge at least a tenner a month. If they get more sports it will be increased.

Bring back the good old days of non subscription tv!! :)

Sports tv in the UK sucks hairy dogs balls.

All sports are becoming pay per view these days - and you have to keep paying additional amounts for each sport you want to watch as they're all on different channels.

Thank god the Australians havent gone down that path to anywhere near the same degree.

It's typical of living in the UK really. If there's a way they can screw you - they will.

nah...only boxing is pay per view...and it's a damnsight cheaper here than it is in australia..was'nt the hatton v pacman fight $50 in australia...it was only $30 (£15) here

as for ESPN UK i guess they'd have access to all the sports ESPN america (european channel, not the ESPN in america) so thats NHL,MLB,NBA etc..then theres all the sports setanta had like NRL,AFL,USPGA golf etc..

Whilst not being pay per view (the odd sporting event aside) it is subscription based.

To get the american ESPN you need sky sports so thats £40 a month. To get this future ESPN channel it will cost you £10 at the mo. So to watch Football, rugby, cricket, infact anything other than the boat race (ok not quite) its gonna cost you £50 a month. This is only set to increase as ESPN bring more sports onto there sports network.

The EU brought in anti Monopoly laws which meant Sky can't buy all the rights. This is to protect the general public. What it does however is cost us a lot of money!

Yes sports tv over here sucks hairy dogs balls!

I don't know how it works in Aus, but as tv rights go higher, something similar will eventually happen over there.

Mate, what I meant was that each sports channel in the UK seems to add a premium to your monthly bill. (what wireman said basically)

In Oz, Fox sports 1, 2 & 3 + ESPN + fuel + various other sports channels would all be included in the basic digital package. I even get main event broadcasts free plus other things, and I'm not even on the top package. Nowhere near top price in fact. The ONLY ad ons here (from what I can work out) are pay per view boxing events and Setanta.

The costs here range from $55 per month (basic pack) to $100 top of the line pack including IQ etc. But the top of the line are really only worth going for if you want movie channels etc as they're the most expensive ad ons.

In the UK it's the sports ad ons that really whack up the pricing.

Apologies for not being clearer.

fair enough...

but i got setanta for free anyway..it depended on which package you had...i have the virgin media XL package (£30 a month) which meant i got setanta 1,2 news, golf, celtic tv & rangers tv for nothing...i then paid an extra £15 for skysports 1,2,3 & xtra

I couldnt believe it last time I was back in the UK. Every sodding house I went to that had Sky hadn't paid the extra to get the sports packages put on.

Selfish so and so's. They knew I was coming. Denying me my footy. I had to go to the pub to watch. It was hard, but I managed to tough it out.

Mind you, I cracked the sh*ts when someone turned a Bradford game I was watching so they could see the latest episode of Harry Enfield.

f**king Southern Jessies!!!
