New Zealand rugby league fans won't be able to see the Kiwis on home soil until 2017.

All four of the Kiwis' tests this year are overseas, one in Australia and three in England, as the country's national rugby league team continues to struggle for exposure at home.

The NZRL had hoped to host next year's Anzac Test, but CEO Phil Holden says the Australian Rugby League Commission's contract with Channel Nine makes this prohibitive.

The Australian broadcaster's deal stipulates the midweek Anzac Test must be broadcast at peak viewing time on Australia's Eastern seaboard, meaning the game would have to kick off at 10pm in New Zealand – which is impractical for the home audience.

"We're still talking, but the reality is that we're bound by the current Channel Nine contract with the ARLC," Holden said.

"It is very specific around kickoff times and, regrettably, it makes it difficult for us to host the Anzac Test.

"That has come on the radar with the ARLC recently and we've been working through that with them and what that means for us.

"So until the new deal takes effect in 2018, when there aren't any of those particular clauses in the contract, that's when I know we'll be hosting test matches against Australia at a kickoff time and venue that suits us. But between now and then, it's difficult."

It appears Newcastle is the most likely venue for next year's Anzac Test, although Townsville is in the running for it. The previous two Anzac tests, in Sydney and Brisbane, provided the NZRL with little financial return.

NZRL are also in talks with their Tasman counterparts about a test between the Kangaroos and Kiwis in October next year before both teams leave for the Four Nations in England and Scotland.

"Again, the conditions will be bound by the Channel Nine agreement, so it will be played over there if we're able to conclude an arrangement that makes sense to both parties."

The Kiwis haven't played in Auckland, the biggest market for rugby league in New Zealand, since 2012 and they won't get an opportunity to play there until the 2017 World Cup.

The NZRL are desperate for the Kiwis to be seen in New Zealand more because it has proved difficult to sign up sponsors as companies don't get an opportunity to capitalise on their investment with the team not playing on home soil.

"We're obviously frustrated about that and disappointed, but I must stress that there has been a massive degree of genuineness from the people we're dealing with in Australia in understanding the impact this has on us," Holden said.

"The good thing is that in 2017 there's the World Cup here, which will see a huge amount of football being played in New Zealand and then from 2018 onwards the international landscape changes forever."

The new broadcasting deal in Australia kicks in 2018 and under the new terms Channel Nine won't be able to dictate what time tests start. Although the Anzac Test will be scrapped, the ARLC are committed to playing tests against New Zealand at the end of every season.

This is just bullshit...the ANZAC test played on a Sunday afternoon this year got high ratings!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league...-be-ranked-No-2-league-nation-for-a-long-time

The test in Brisbane on Sunday was watched by the biggest capital city audience for any football code this year, with 939,000 viewers tuning into the coverage on Nine and Gem, comprising of 541,000 in Sydney, 319,000 in Brisbane, 60,000 in Melbourne and 19,000 in Perth.

In comparison, the Collingwood-Essendon AFL match on Anzac Day was watched by 758 691 viewers in the five capital cities, while the biggest NRL audiences were for the Rabbitohs-Broncos (729,000) and Roosters-Broncos (691,000).

An historic trans-Tasman rugby league Test will be played in Perth next year.

Australia and New Zealand, the top two teams in the world, will play the first Test staged in Perth at nib Stadium in October with the National Rugby League and the State Government set to finalise the deal.

NEWCASTLE is one of the leading contenders to host rugby league’s Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand next year.

Discussions between the Australian Rugby League Commission and New Zealand Rugby League are ongoing, and a final decision is expected next month, but the Newcastle Herald has been told Hunter Stadium is on a shortlist that includes 1300 SMILES Stadium in Townsville and nib Stadium in Perth.

It is understood Canberra was another option in earlier negotiations but if an Australian venue is chosen, it is most likely to be a race of three, and there is strong support for Newcastle.

So which one is it? Newcastle or Perth? And is the test being played at the end of the year in October or during the middle of the year?

NZRL are also in talks with their Tasman counterparts about a test between the Kangaroos and Kiwis in October next year before both teams leave for the Four Nations in England and Scotland.

Or there going to be two test matches? Both in Aus? Will the Perth game be the 4 Nations game?

I think no one has any real idea.

Why can't they play someone like Samoa in Auckland? Australia aren't the only team in the world.

Exactly this. Play Samoa at Mt Smart or somewhere.

Because the only time they can play it is before the Grand Final...which means it could potentially be a weaker Kiwis side.

They did it a few years back against Samoa and Tonga..i believe the Tonga game in Rotorua turned a small profit....not sure about the Samoan game...

Plus the the games will be lucky to draw 10,000 where as Kiwis vs Aussie in Auckland will be 20,000 plus...

Just wait till after this upcoming series is done cos i won't be surprised if the RFL & NZRL arrange something that'll see england replace australia as NZ opponents during the anzac/pacific test weekend...

Its not as if we have to fly a full 18 man team over from england anymore..there could be 10-12+ england players in the NRL by 2018

If they decided to play in New Zealand, dont force the game at 8.30pm their time, I mean it was a joke they had to it last year because of Ch 9.

Play it on a Sunday, as mentioned they got good ratings this year, the crowd wasnt too bad considering they had to change it over that weekend, could suit both parties.

The Perth game is at the end of the year. The mid-year test is still up for grabs.

The Perth game is at the end of the year. The mid-year test is still up for grabs.

So is Perth also going to get the ANZAC game?

The last time Australia and New Zealand played twice in a year that included a Four Nations tournament was in 2011. That year the ANZAC test was in Gold Coast, end of year test in Newcastle, then England for 4 Nations.

Interestingly, Jim Doyle, NZRL Boss had this to say at the time:

The Kiwis will play the Kangaroos a fortnight after the NRL grand final after Australia agreed to New Zealand's plans for an annual home-and-away test series.

NZRL boss Jim Doyle says in future the fixture will alternate host nations to give local fans a fair share of test football.

Doyle says the deal allows for two games a year, except in Rugby League World Cup years, and doesn't include Four Nations matches, meaning there could be up to four matches annually between the old rivals.

It's the final plank in a raft of negotiations between Doyle and the Australians over the international calendar ahead, with the 2012 calendar still to be fixed but as revealed by the Star-Times in March, likely to include a southern hemisphere tour by the English and the launch of a Pacific All-Stars team.

Securing such a commitment from the Australians is a significant boost to the Kiwi game's bottom line, with Doyle describing the financial package on offer from Newcastle ? a rarely-used test venue ? as "good commercial terms". In the past, such tests have been worth around $500,000 to the NZRL balance sheet.

Whilst they did play twice in 2012 in a home/away it hasn't happened since.

Anyway, there seems to be much confusion from Australian press and NZRL about what next year's schedule actually looks like.

No, I haven't seen that reported anywhere.

The second source I provided in original post, the Newcastle Herald, states discussions have been held with Newcastle, Townsville and Perth.

Not that there is anything wrong at all about 2 test matches being held next year, that's great. But as my previous post stated from the 2012 article, will NZRL be getting the profit from the October test?

My apologies, though to be fair I wouldn't put too much credence in what is reported in the Newcastle Herald.

Haha, pretty much!

Anyway, we'll get confirmation of whats happening when the NRL draw is released I would imagine. Is meant to be by mid-November I think?
