The fact merkins are asking if Dostoevsky said it is evidence that he did. Ergo, ‘no evidence’ is a false statement.

But just because there’s evidence of something doesn’t mean it happened. This same evidence also supports the theory that merkins are falsely attributing a statement to a historical figure. The question you have to ask yourself is why would they. He is a long dead fiction writer. Hardly a source of moral authority.

What’s important is whether the claimed statement accurately reflects the situation today. Plenty of people think so; taking offence has emerged as the primary weapon for stifling opposing points of view, and adoption of this tactic is increasing. People are concerned enough about it that they are now fact checking whether it was predicted by a dead Russian. We do know one of his characters claimed that people love to be affronted. I think that’s as true now as then.
