Unfortunately the whole public debate on this issue lacks any real perspective.

Agree. Coal power generation will be part of the mix in the future as the world transitions to alternatives.

However the between the Greens saying shut them all down now and the Conservatives saying that we should scrap all renewable energy targets, the debate becomes a school yard sledge fest.

Wouldn't it be amazing to have a progressive government who can get shit done without having to placate wierdo cross benchers. Our friends across the ditch are streets ahead of us in that respect.

Another thing though - Everyone immediately leaps to coal fired power stations and thermal coal.

What about our vast swathes of metallurgical coking coal that help merkins overseas build steel? How else is that steel going to be made?
