How's Canberra's lifestyle,
I didn't move here for the lifestyle, I moved here for work. But my 'lifestyle' at the moment is about raising my kids, and Canberra is a great place to do it. Will they get bored and f**k off when they grow up? Maybe, but if so they would've done it for sure if we'd stayed in Perth.

I had no chance of buying my own home either, at least not one I wanted to live in with my kids, so I invested in the share market for eight years before buying my first place. I would have much preferred buying a suitable place at the start and just paying it off (which is the 'easy' option) but I couldn't afford to, so I rented while building a deposit through investing (not saving). Merkins giving up because they can't have everything they want right now deserve the situation they end up in.

They certainly don't seem to be willing to make any sacrifices, although to be fair, I wasn't either until my mid thirties.

The issue is undeniably getting worse over time.............

Meanwhile rents have exploded, if you aren't from a family that owns real estate today, it is becoming less and less likely that you ever will.

I paid my first home off by age 30. But it only cost like $250k and I bought at age 22. You where busy living the good life and where driven out of Sydney by people like me who where working harder and had better focus.

True but should merkins just give up? Most of the stuff we think we need isn't actually needed, and anyone with spare dollars can invest in shares.

Eventually enough voters will focus on housing as the core concern for policymakers rather than identity politics, and the problem will ease. Because there is plenty that can be done to increase the number of houses built, limit the number of bedrooms left empty and reduce the number of people needing a roof over their heads.

The thing is I grew up poor in the suburbs like many on here so getting in the market was easier.
I just can't see kids who grew up in rich areas moving out to the burbs. They would stick out like dogs balls and wouldnt be used to the simpler lifestyle. Also would be away from family and friends and it would be a downgrade in status. I don't see them doing so. Perhaps coming from a modest upbringing nowdays is an advantage based on expectations and reality

Actually I joined the army where I earned the same no matter where I lived. After Townsville I asked for a posting back to Sydney and realised I hated the place. And I was living in Concord, not Mt Druitt. After that I discovered Perth, which is much nicer than Sydney (unless you're very rich, in which case Sydney is probably awesome). If we had extended family in Perth we probably would've stayed forever.

I'm sure living close to Sydney and all the entertainment is a possitive but more so when younger and have the energy to take advantage of it or if cashed up and just want to blast off on fancy lifestyle etc.
I'd personally be just as happy living in a quieter place with some space to work on a car/motorbike,garden,garage etc. I place higher value on those type of things then dining out.

Look at the people who own in places like Marrickville. The inner west was once full of rough, working class neighborhoods with crappy fibro shacks. Now the nice, renovated ones are owned by people who went to school in Bellevue Hill or Milson's Point, because they can't afford to buy where they grew up.

So you're saying you didn't live in a 3 bedroom townhouse walkable from amenities and all your favourite cafes and wine bars? Because that's how good the kids think you had it.
My parents place was in Rydalmere. It was a three minute walk to Dundas shops which included a decent Chinese restaurant, Greek run fish and chip shop, newsagency and a bottle shop. When we moved to Mortake the Palace Hotel was virtually across the road near the gasworks. It was a three minute drive to Concord as well as the Lui Rose Chinese at North Strathfield. Special occasions were reserved for The Sydney Rowing Club at Abbotsford. We both worked hard to pay the block of dirt off. We rarely ventured away. So basically it was always home meals with takeaway once a week, SRC or similar for special occasions. Make of all that what you will.

You should buy an old outback pub and reno it.

Bathurst will be the place to be. High speed metro to Parramatta (the CBD of Sydney). The harbour precinct will be for the well heeled merkins supported by tourism. Anybody on here buying off the plan for the new Darling Harbour apartments?

That's all true, In the end though even if you do all the things you should do, it's still getting harder with time.

And the solutions that have been thrown up by government for years have been to put more money into the demand side of the market, which to no ones surprised despite helping people get in, hasn't addressed the problem of affordability, because quite the opposite, it's supported price rises.
