Newcastle Knights to be stuck with underperforming playing group until end of 2013 NRL season

The Wayne Bennett revolution is coming - it will just take another year before he can stamp his full imprint on Newcastle Knights.

NSW Origin star Greg Bird may well be on the Knights' radar for 2014 but there is little room in the salary cap to make any big moves before then.

"The real action will come at the end of 2013 when there is more than $1 million worth of players coming off contract," a club source said.

The Knights' salary cap for next season has largely been spent on player upgrades and the signing of Beau Scott from St George Illawarra and Dane Gagai from Brisbane Broncos.

Newcastle's fall from grace has prompted suggestions the knives are being sharpened for a cleanout similar to 2007.

Even contracted players such as Wes Naiqama and Junior Sau are being shopped around in a bid to free up salary cap room.

"But there won't be any more marquee signings for next year. Maybe a couple of middle-of-the-range players will be added, but that's about it," the source said.

As for the predicted player cleanout this year?

"There will be no player cleanout," Knights chief executive Matt Gidley said.

"Every club is looking at their roster right now and we are no different.

There are certainly players we are looking at in relation to their performance and if they are off contract. It stands to reason they need to be performing at their absolute best.

"It's the same at any club.

"I think the biggest thing with us right now is this club has certain standards and all our stakeholders - our supporters, our ex-players, our sponsors, everyone - expect them to be upheld.

"They are frustrated, as we all are. It's fair to say the current playing group is quite detached from those standards right now.

"That's what Wayne and the club is trying to address."

Bennett, who was signed on a $1-million-a-season deal, is looking at missing the finals for the first time since 1991.

Knights players were booed by their home fans last week when they lost to Canberra.

That didn't happen even during the 13-game losing streak in 2005.

"They don't mind if we get beaten, as long as they think the players are having a go," said former Knights forward Marc Glanville.

"Right now, their belief is too many of the boys aren't having a real dig.

"That's where we are at."

The sobering news for Knights fans is there is likely to be more pain before there is any major improvement.

Bennett has found himself without his best player, Kurt Gidley, and short on team leadership with a forward pack largely firing blanks.

"I can't see us getting out of it this season," Glanville says.

"Losing becomes habitual and a lot of the boys seem almost resigned to it, which is a real worry. Losing doesn't seem to be hurting some of them enough. That's always a bad sign.

"When our two best players over the past month are our oldest - Danny Buderus and Willie Mason - you have a problem. Should the rest of the playing group be embarrassed about that?

"Absolutely they should.

"I'm looking at the Parramatta game in a fortnight and thinking if we lose that one, we'll win the wooden spoon."

It's exactly what I want to hear, just a bit of openness and honesty. I didn't expect that we'd have any more marquee type signings this year.

The "not what we want to hear" part was more in reference to the fact next year doesn't sound like it will be that much different to this year :(

May even cause a drop off in season ticket renewals for next year if the boys don,t have a remarkable change in attitude for the remainder of this season.

If we get some youngsters to step up and Beau Scott, and presuming he signs, Stagg tighten the fringes then we could have a very different attitude to our game. I can see why some will be frustrated. I am confident names like Inglis are every chance of being here in 2014. Gagai looks to be a real x factor type player as well. We beat some huge competition for that kid's signature.

Mate if they keep performing the way they are I can tell you I wont be renewing. Nothing quite so dissapointing as forking out a few hundred $ for platinum tickets just to show up and cop the performances they have been giving. I work an extra shift generally on a friday just so I can make the game. If I can do 18 hours straight just to see my team then these guys should be able to turn up for 80 damn minutes a week.

Next year is a whole new year. In ways there will be less expectations, Gidley back. Start the season with more cohesion and understanding of Bennett's game plan.

Nothing article and doesn't concern me about next year at all. This year we started pretty well for the first 4 games, there are signs we can be a top 8 team with the personnel we have. And next year will truly be a perform or get out of here year for a lot of players too.

It means that most of the players know they still have time to make an impression.

Good to hear about Greg Bird. How old will he be in 2014?

Even though Midley denies it, there will still be a clean out for next season- just not to the degree that is needed. Naiqama and Sau are still being shopped around and I can't see them both being here at the start of 2013. Not to mention the host of off contract players that won't be re-signed. 5-6 new faces in the squad is till a fairly significant shake up.

Posted this on another forum but seems appropriate.

If Matt Gidley says there isn't a cleanout I'd hate to see what a real one looks like. The cheer girls and ball boys would be looking over their shoulders.

These are the players the Knights used in the final three games of 2011 and where they are now;

Akuila Uate – contracted for 2013
Neville Costigan – contracted for 2013
James McManus – contracted for 2013
Jarrod Mullen – contracted for 2013

Ryan Stig – contracted for 2013, season ending injury
Kurt Gidley – contracted for 2013, season ending injury

Chris Houston – un-contracted for 2013
Joel Edwards – un-contracted for 2013
Richard Fa'aoso – un-contracted for 2013, unlikely to be re-signed
Evarn Tuimavave – un-contracted for 2013, unlikely to be re-signed, playing NSW Cup

Peter Mata'utia – contracted for 2013, playing NSW Cup
Zane Tetavano – contracted for 2013, playing NSW Cup
Siuatonga Likiliki – contracted for 2013, playing NSW Cup
Matt Hilder – contracted for 2013, dropped to NSW Cup

Antonio Kaufusi – released mid-contract to ESL
Isaac De Gois – released mid-contract to Sharks
Mark Taufua – released mid-contract to Sharks
Junior Sa'u – trying to be released mid-contract
Wes Naiqama - trying to be released mid-contract

Marvin Karawana – wasn't re-signed, went to ???
Steve Southern – wasn't re-signed, went to ESL
Zeb Taia – not re-signed, going to ESL
Cameron Ciraldo – wasn't re-signed, went to Panthers
Keith Lulia – wasn't re-signed, went to ESL

Adam MacDougall – retired

It's the worst when you read players have been upgraded.

We've been a fringe top 8 team for about 5 years running now, what has warranted these upgrades in that time?

Gidley would have been upgraded after his boom 2007-9 seasons. Aku Uate upgraded to money of a top 5 winger in the comp. McManus probably on decent coin for a winger too.

Mullen would have been upgraded whether he should have or not.

None of our current forwards have been with us long enough to be upgraded really.

So yeah very puzzling..

We made the Top 8 last year with a much lower profile coach and a forward pack that boasted Ciraldo and Tolar. All hope is not lost for 2013.

A fit Kurt Gidley, an agressive backrower, Darius with a year and another pre season to gel with the side, Mason and Buderus with a year of regular first grade under their belts, Mase with an NRL pre season. I'm optimistic for some improvement next season.

I have a feeling we can't buy ourselves out of this either. I'm not sure what the problem is, but football players don't start playing under one of the best coaches in the world and go backwards.
