November 1 is fast approaching 47 days away after listening to the Dragons Den podcast seems as though we have our guns loaded. But what about 2026??? Who comes in to improve the squad.

I think '26 will see the rise of a fair few of our juniors, really challenging for that prized position they want to play. Many have already tasted 1st grade and now know what is required. They have also felt the disappointment of losses, which, in it;s proper form, stimulate them into not wanting that feeling again.

We are slowly getting rid of the passengers, the roadblocks and the pension planners. We are looking to youth, energy and skills, far beyond what we have previously had masquerading as 1st graders. The Egans, Stewart, LPT and the Couchman boys are now the blueprint. Add in Truck, NT and Buchanon and there's 8 of a possible starting 13 already with the taste.

Yeah, there will be the remaining who are maybe entrenched in seeing out their contracts, but most will be gone at season '26 end. I don't really have to say who they are, I think most already know.

But, as this threads title suggests, maybe those who have been tapped, will start thinking about their own future (as in the latest rumour of Blocka to ESL). We've signed Atkinson, a bit of an unknown given his (deliberate?) lack of game time at the Sharks this year, and Kerr, who we know can get an offload away.

There's also the 'pool' of available players which is really filled with 'the fish that JW rejects'. None of off-contract players give me any feels about them improving our squad. We really can't afford to sign someone just for the sake of signing someone, that's basically been our recruitment philosophy for the past 12 years.

I hate the word 'improvement', it's so subjective. So, I won't use it to describe what '26 will be. What I will say is that we will see growth. Growth and development. Will we play finals football? If we can show the desire and form that had us beating the Raiders and Sharks, then yeah, maybe a possibility, but again it's subjective.

What I really want to see is a paradigm shift in the way the Dragons are managed and represented in the football world. No more 'Dargons", no more 'jobs for the boys', no more thinking close enough is good enough. We've started this process already, hiring a new CEO and Recruitment Manager, and letting go of a few fossils such as Millward. I'll even go as far as saying that Carr getting the HC role in the ESL, will be a blessing in disguise. Hopefully, if the rumour is also correct, DY will take up an assistant role at Newie. Hiring Ennis, I think will be a masterstroke, and if above is proven a truth, then surly Talau should get promoted up. We just have to be very selective in who replace the HC roles in both JF and Cup (although Willie may do a dual role scenario). And don't forget the COE, where we will come together as 1 club, not 2 separate identities operating out of 2 separate offices (no wonder people got away with so much previously, go figure)

Lastly, I don't see many changes to the team (main squad) for '26. Gutho will still be fullback, CT (hammy permitting) and a choice of Feagai or Sloan as the other winger (I think Williams may be a smokey though at least for a debut at some stage). Val and Suli as the centres. The biggest change will be Atkinson as the 7 and (waiting for the groans) KFlan as the 6. Not defending this by any means, but he's a far better defender than LKT at this stage, and we leaked points through that avenue this year. LKT will partner Reed in Cup, which I am very ok with (more groans). I think 12 months of developing their game plans and identifying each other's style of play will put us in good stead in the years to come. Cook will be starting 9 (his last year) and Lids will stay at 14. The forwards will sort themselves out by themselves with what I've mentioned already.

So, that's my take, apologies for being long winded in its content. Season '26 = growth and development, the real test is the lead into and the actual of season '27.

Stay strong Dragons fans!

Let’s just try to get the players we can hat truly improve the squad. If they are available not till 27, then so be it, we can see if it’s possible to poach early or put in place best options till then. Worst case is we make short term 2026 changes that hamstring us for 27 and beyond.

From what I've read / heard from Anderson & Flanno '27 is the year they're really going hard at.
For '26 I think they're just literally hoping for someone to fall from the sky during the offseason.
I do think Atkinson will add something to our attack and kicking game. My biggest worry as it has been for what seems like years now is the forwards. I'm tired of watching games played at the wrong end of the field. The addition of Kerr doesn't excite me at all.
And FFS please come up with a defence strategy that will work in the modern game.
Have got to say based on the current squad I have zero expectations for '26. Hopefully a quality recruit or 2 in the offseason will change my mind.
We are so far away from the roster quality - age, speed, mobility - of the top 8 sides that it's depressing.

2026 will be another rough year it seems, the recruitment really needs to be nailed for 2027, we just can't miss out this time.

That said, I'd look to make the signings of Adam Elliott and Phillip Sami happen for 2026, both on two year deals. Think they'll both improve us instantly for next season and give us a better chance at being competitive. They'd still be good contributors the year after as well.

We can't go into next season with our current middles, and Elliott is underrated, he'd do well for us. We also simply cannot go into next season with our top wing options being CT and Feagai, we just can't. Sloan isn't good enough, we can't afford for him to be on the wing for another season either.

In 2027, there will be a big demand for good players given the increase of a new team in the competition. Same goes for 2028. So I say, go hard for 2026 and lock that squad up till the end of 2029.

I feel sure we are underspent salary cap wise at the moment. Use this money now to:
Strike an agreement with those players we want to move on so that we don't have them sucking away at our cap next season.
Front-end those we want to keep so that wee have sufficient capacity next season.

Anderson needs to start now to push out:
Sloan to ESL 500k
Lawrie to ESL 500k
Ilias to anywhere. He is blocking Reed's development. 300K
Suli he does not feed his winger enough. Or move him to 17. 600K
Leilua move him to the prop rotation if we can't sign a marquee prop. 600k

There is 2.5m per season. Buy a good marquee prop.

If we can do this:

1. Ramsey
2. CT
3. Buchanan
4. Holmes
5. Lawson
6. Gutherson
7. Atkinson
8. Leilua
9. Liddle
10.T Couchman
11. Truck
12. Su'A
13. Eagan

14. Flanagan
15. LPT
16. Steart
17. Nick T or Suli

18. R Couchman

Coaching Staff
Flanagan
Ennis
Talau

Young gone to another club.

I know some of his family were grateful for the efforts of Ricky Stewart in helping Elliot develop as a person and compose himself.

I’ll try to get a message to Adam that there’s interest.

At the doggies, Adam had that mad Monday episode of drinking heavily, pulling his pants down and dancing on the table until he was encouraged to step down.

So it was thought by some that he had drinking issues.

Thence Ricky enticed him to Canberra and I am told that he managed to resolve the more excessive of his expressionistic and exhibitionistic tendencies.

If you ask @skeepe, Ricky is able to help players on the personal level. Not just footy. We don’t hear that much about those things.

Adam left Canberra for his beautiful wife.

I personally thought that he should have stayed in Canberra where he was building up. Same with Wighton.

I think I would give Adam the benefit of the doubt these days.

As a player, not my first target lol.

Yep.

Fox did that player valuation assessment and found the dragons had the least valuable side.

And somehow, the storm were valued at a robust 31% more than the dragons. Astonishing.

Theres the usual explanations about differences in management and things like that, but as an outcome, even if everything is open and honest to the auditing it’s very difficult.

And often times, we immediately credit a coaches success to the clubs position on the ladder, but I think we should also consider the cattle at their disposal.

DA should make an impact, hopefully he’s still got the gifts. Memory serves, you’ve also got decent youngsters coming through.

Recruitment is an art as well as a science. A couple of bad decisions and you’re cactus.

Yeh, but why the laissez faire attitude at the beginning of the year towards recruitment particularly front rowers or tough metre eating forwards? Blind Freddy knew Saints would struggle due to the gaps up front at the start of the year. Its not a terrible squad at all, quite exciting in areas, but if we go in 2026 with the same up front…..????

young ‘potential’ forwards need that muscle and support over 26 grinding rounds otherwise they will continue to get injured and we’ll be blaming injuries again, see it coming. Hope they are looking hard and wide!

Chevy Stewart posted a strange photo on his Instagram story captioning onto 26 with a sword emoji. Find it strange considering he is named in their extended squad. Also heard this evening there will be a player signing announcement this week this was through a fellow supporter who seemed fairly confident so take that with a grain of salt.

Chevy coming could be a reason why Ramsay was only offered a train & trial also.

Interesting 🤔
As for the player signing, outside back with speed or a middle

Guys like Elliot would be blocking the path for our younger fwds. We already have Kerr, don't need another journeyman. I'm not tying up 2027 salary cap into journeyman players. Whether we like it or not, we're not going to 'recruit' our way out of our current situation. It'll be through development & juniors, we've already started well with our future fwds. The next focus should be on the outside backs & spine players.

Our recruitment should be for specific targets in the future which will be clearer after the 2026 season. We hope that Atko guns it at hb but he might not or he might be needed elsewhere, say fullback. LKT might have a transformative off-season & lock himself into the 5/8th role. Someone like Jesse Williams or Sloan might catapult themselves into quality 1st grade wingers or Nick T into a centre with another off-season of development. Many unknowns in this team apart from our future fwd stocks.

We need to stop thinking about top 8 & plan for top 4, otherwise we'll end up like newcastle. Treading water in the top 8 then bottom out into nothing. Only being in the top 4 gives you genuine chance at sustained premiership glory. I want premiership glory, not treading water as a top 8 team.
