I have been to the grand final for 6 years in a row now (ever since 2004) and I don't really care about scalpers tbh. You have more than enough chance to get a ticket, and i'm sick to death of hearing bandwagon fans complaining about missing out, when in fact they have probably attended 1 club game all year, if that. If your team is going good at this time of the year, or if you are an NRL fan in general, grab a ticket. If not, you can always use the members priority window the week of the grand final if you are a big enough fan to be a season ticket holder. Otherwise you can always pay some poor bugger who's team bombed out $1000 for your ticket because you jumped on the bandwagon a few weeks ago. I loved the fact that I knew people last year who paid $4000 for 5 seats to the grand final sitting in the clouds on level 6 in ANZ stadium, only to see the eels lose. Best thing was they didn't attend a single game prior to that in 2009.
It's not practical for supporters of all teams to just 'grab a ticket'. It is a huge amount of money - $60 for the cheapest ticket - to commit on speculation. There is a big chance that plenty of genuine supporters miss out on tickets because they do not want to gamble of their team making it this far out from October, and might miss out on the tickets held back until GF week.
The system the NRL ought to implement is one whereby season ticket holders pay a nominal amount - $5, say - as an 'insurance policy' of sorts. So if your team makes the GF, you are 100% guaranteed a ticket. If not, your $5 goes towards processing fees etc. That way, the NRL can hold back as many tickets as necessary (it would not be much more than the current 14,000 they hold back until GF week) and true supporters can sleep easy knowing they have a rolled-gold ticket waiting for them if their team qualifies.
Anyone who isn't a season ticket holder deserves no special treatment. They can join the dogfight for tickets with bandwagoners etc. You either support your club by buying a season ticket, and are entitled to certain privileges, or you don't. At the moment, even with a season ticket, proper supporters aren't given enough of a piggy back over the flood of casual September fans that drive demand for tickets.
