I don't agree with some of the younger generation being named immortals before the likes of sterlo, Kenny, Eg Andrew Johns shouldn't have been named an immortal as yet
Some of these older fellas played in the toughest era where they worked full time jobs and copped elbows, high shots, spear tackles etc.
Great the game has been cleaned up but we can't discount what the older fellas endured. Look at Ron Coote...extremely grateful, humble and sincere

Gerard Waitley explained the AFL system on SEN this morning. They definitely have it worked out … players can be inducted into their hof 5 years after retiring then the next level of legend status, which is the equivalent of the immortals, is applicable some 10-20 years after that.

he went on to say that the wait and time taken to induct adds to the ‘charm’ of the whole thing. Now I regularly think Gerard is a bit of a knob but I reckon he (and the AFL) are spot in on this instance

NFL Hall of Fame process:

Eligibility​

Players and coaches become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame after having been retired for five years. Any other contributor, such as a team owner or league executive, can come up for voting at any time.

Selection process​

Inductees to the Hall of Fame are selected by a 44-member board of selectors made up primarily of football writers. The members of the board are usually beat writers from NFL cities, and aside from one representative from the Pro Football Writers Association, the board members are selected to open-ended terms.

Any player, coach or contributor can be nominated for the Hall of Fame via letter or email. The selection committee then narrows the nominees to 25 semifinalists in October. A month later, the committee narrows the list of 25 to 15 finalists via mail balloting. Once the 15 finalists have been determined, a nine-member subcommittee, known as the seniors committee, will add two "senior" finalists from candidates who finished their careers at least 25 years prior to the vote. Those two finalists are added to the pool, bringing the total number of finalists to 17.

The final vote is conducted in person the day before the Super Bowl. One member of the committee presents a case for each finalist. To be chosen for enshrinement, a finalist must receive at least 80 percent of the vote. However, if fewer than four finalists receive 80 percent, then the top four finalists will be chosen for enshrinement, regardless of the percentage they received. No more than seven candidates can be enshrined in any given year, so if more than seven finalists receive 80 percent of the vote, then the top seven vote-getters will be enshrined.


Seems a lot more professional and exhaustive than either our HOF or Immortal processes.

Makes zense. Gotta give it a good 10-20 years to see if a scandal emerges before calling someone an immortal these days.

He was an amazing attacking lock forward and cover defending defensive player much like Pricey but before his time.

Locks played a different role back then other than just another middle forward. They defended between the ruck and the fullback, kind of like a defensive mid in football.

He was just a natural athlete and he blocked Ron Lynch from the Kangaroos lock position. Lynch played lock for Parra and second row for the Kangaroos.

By the way, I'm glad Cam Smith got nothing, or at least so far.

Brilliant player but how can they nominate a player who brought the game into disrepute by signing 3 contracts ?

It would be a joke if he ever received anything.

IIRC they said that what Joey did off the field, should have no barring on his admission to the HOF or Immortality.

I agree, it's very controversial when Cam Smith is discussed.
