NRL announce higher than expected surplus

The most significant increase was in game receipts, most likely due to the success of this year’s State of Origin series.

I still think the future of RL is in Rep footy...

Shorten the Nrl season and invest some effort in building some more annual Rep rivalries.

Id expect it to increase the Nrl crowds too with the smaller number of regular season game to pick from.

Yes yes yes yes. 25 rounds is too many - too many nothing games in and around origin time. You see teams not turn up for no reason. Shorten the seasons and each game means more for the fans and the teams.

I know you shouldn't compare with NFL but I love how they refer to teams by their win/loss record because with only 16 games each game means something.

That's a handy result for the NRL, sure as heck beats a loss.

They really should demonstrate though how they plan on using those excess funds for the good of the game. NFP's should be working hard on ensuring that they use the value they generate for the betterment of their stakeholders. Profits too large without a plan for re-investment is a wasted opportunity. Is the funds to be used for expansion? Better facilities for existing clubs? Development of younger players, lower tier leagues and the regional game?

I knew about this but was wondering how they actually implement it.

My understand is that the nrl keeps the amount that they expect to make (proposed budget) and then the extra amount above what is expected then gets divided amongst the 4 areas.

So my take is, that the proposed budget surplus is $25m and it got to $32mil which is a $7 mil increase which will be put aside and added to the other years of this broadcast cycle. It is to be divided amongst the 4 areas at the end of the tv deal.

An interesting take. I cant actually find anywhere what the agreement is so I guess we'll have to wait and see. I really hope they arent just going to give 50% of it to the clubs and players!
