NRL: Cherry-ripe for picking

12 Nov 10 @ 03:51pm by JASON AVEDISSIAN
Daly Cherry-Evans is ready to play NRL football for Manly in 2011.
FOR the second time in 12 months, the Sea Eagles will usher in a new halfback with a rookie from central Queensland ready to make the No.7 jumper his own.
Daly Cherry-Evans will get first shot at Trent Hodkinson’s vacant halfback position next season.
The 21-year-old, born in Brisbane but raised in Mackay, was vying for the berth with Hodkinson last campaign.
Hodkinson won out in the end, going on to represent City in a fine introduction into the NRL.
But his off-season departure to the Bulldogs has paved the way for Cherry-Evans to get a crack at the role.
“He’s going to get a shot at it,” Manly coach Des Hasler confirmed this week.
“He’s going to have to work hard for it, but we are confident he can do the job.
“He’s got a good kicking game, is athletic and has all the skills.”
Of course, Cherry-Evans believes he is ready for the job. Without a trace of arrogance, the Queensland Cup player of the year, knows he must toil throughout the summer to ensure he gets the job done.
“I’m more than ready,” he said.
“I’m confident in my own ability, hopefully I’ll get the chance. I’m not thinking too far ahead, I’ve just got to work on my game through the preseason and get myself right for round one.”
With a couple of former representative halfbacks within the coaching staff, the youngster will have ample support to complete the transformation from a Queensland Cup player to an NRL playmaker.
“It’s really good to come to training and be taught by people who have been there before,” Cherry-Evans said, referring to Hasler and Geoff Toovey.
Hasler said any hesitation about introducing the Queenslander into the NRL without any first-grade experience is of no concern.
“That’s what they said about Trent Hodkinson,” the coach said.
“I’m confident in the abilities of our coaching staff, the conditioning staff and the players around him, to get the job done.”
