NRL clubs being sponsored by gambling establishments

I don't know guys, this is starting to worry me :sarcasm:

The NRL has been tarnished by several claims over recent years of gambling influencing the outcome of games.

Are we really that hard up for sponsors that we need Centrebet Stadium, Star City Rabbitohs and a cross to the latest TAB odds every 5 minutes during the Friday night game?

The risk we run is that at some point, we start heading down the path of a sport such as boxing, which is more riddled with allegations of the result being fixed

Do we really need that headache? Can't we just leave it alone? Its not so much the reality, the harm and damage largely lies in the PERCEPTION that it creates

Little kids walking around with Star City banners on their jersey? Makes me sick

Cheers,

clubs will argue that they provide social benefit to the community, a lot more then just gambling dens

What we are talking about here are groups purely set up for the purposes of gambling

It is the same as alcohol sponsorship (and tabacco previously). All three are addictive and all have detrimental effects on your health/finances.

But this sponsorship will stay in place - they have the money, the clubs need the money.

money that they can't get from elsewhere?

says a lot about their ability to sell themselves to corporates

Why is there no outcry when Cricket relays odds every two overs, or during an A-League game? Why is it always NRL that cop the criticism?

Who cares if kids are wearing Souths jerseys with Star City logos? They are wearing the jerseys cos it's a Souths jersey.

If they ask who are Star City, their parents can explain and educate them on the topic.

Most EPL clubs are sponsored by gambling sites and have their own affiliated gambling site. It's a non-issue as people need to take responsibility for their choices, and not blame it on 'sponsors.'

The problem is any sponsorship will have complaints. The exception being electrical companies. Should The Government sponsor NSW Cricket? Or Mission Australia Fury in A League? Is a gambling company worse than Harvey Norman's take home now pay in 3 years? Or the banks crying poor and raising rates yet sponsoring Stadiums or teams? So while it's not ideal most sponsorships have their problems

We're not rolling in money atm, and beggars can't be choosers. Maybe after the next tv deal we'll be able to be more picky about sponsors.

Or the government might just ban it one day like they banned smoking sponsorships.

Well said.

There's no doubt sports bodies need to be wary of match-fixing (and indeed the perception of it), and be seen to be acting positively and vigilantly against it, but it is not sponsorship that makes illegal acts happen or makes people overspend.

Betting agencies associated with the game must sign integrity agreements that insist on co-operation.

''Gambling on sport is as old as sport itself. We have to accept that being able to bet on a game adds a very enjoyable aspect to viewing,'' Gallop said. ''The arrangements that we now have with betting agencies put us in a lot better position not only in terms of being compensated for the use of our intellectual property but also in our ability to access information about irregular betting.

''We've worked hard with all the sports to get ourselves to that position and indeed some of the matters that have been investigated and are currently being investigated - those investigations have only been possible because of those arrangements. Our ability to get to the bottom of issues … is greatly improved by those arrangements.''

Gallop, however, conceded that issues such as spot betting were a concern, as was relentless promotion. Primary NRL broadcaster Channel Nine has been criticised for its commentators' spruiking of betting options during broadcasts..

''In terms of the promotion of gambling we do have restrictions,'' he said.

''Individual players can't endorse individual agencies. There are elements that are concerning such as types of bets and aggressive promotion.''
Gallop said he was not alarmed by reporting of players with gambling problems.

''Our players are a cross-section of the community and there are going to be players with social problems, be they gambling , alcohol or drugs,'' he said.

In many ways the old Leagues Club model was founded on a greater ill - that was people throwing money into a poker machine and hoping for a win - there was no skill, no judgement.

Same with state govt.s making money from lotteries and scratchies, or the local chuch making money from a raffle.

In my eyes, betting your money on a football or cricket match using your judgement is not in the same division as gambling your money on chance of pokies or lotteries. [See also "How Gambling Ruined Sport"]

Cool argument.

If another sporting body does it, so should the NRL.

Thats the trouble with the whole NRL mentality. They are follower's. Never have the initiative to step on the front foot and step outside the square.

Gambling robs people of everything and does NOTHING for society. I'm so glad I follow a sporting organization that encourages gambling.

You guys need to think about the perception it creates...perception is reality, the facts run a poor second

It's easy money, for now. No doubts time will come when either A) it will plague the game with scandal and the NRL will act or B) the Govt will take some social leadership and ban its promotion through sport.

The Ch9 odds every 3 seconds really does my head in. As a non gambler I have no interest what so ever, it gets in the way of the commentary and the commentators sound embarrased having to talk about it.
