F*ck off Sydney hater. Who says they are all cutting junior funding?

I think Easts did. Meaning they save about $20. What others did?

Easts were the only club to do it, and because they were then poaching a large amount of Penrith juniors, the Penrith CEO questioned whether the Roosters were fulfilling their licence agreement. Im not actually certain that they did actually cut off their Harold Matts and SG Ball sides. I think it was mentioned but never happend. Not too certain.

Easts did cut their Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides last year, but after some pressure they reversed the decision and fielded a Harold Matthews team, and their NSW Cup feeder team Newtown Jets picked up the slack and fielded a SG Ball side in their place using what would have been players from the Roosters SG Ball team. So there was no actual reduction in teams. The 2009 Jets SG Ball side was fully paid for and run by the Jets so they can legitimately call it a Newtown team, and it was the first time Newtown fielded a team in that comp since 1983 (as Newtown) or 1985 (as Newtown-Campbelltown).

The Roosters are back in SG Ball this year and Newtown are out. Which is a bit of a shame as I would have loved to see both Easts and Newtown have SG Ball sides but apparently Newtown with their shoestring budget just couldn't afford it. The Jets did well just to finance a SG Ball side last year in addition to their NSW Cup team.

Says someone who's club is propped up to the tune of $6,000,000 per year minimum (at the expense of all other clubs, as all clubs provide the "product" not just Melbourne, so therefore are they not worthy of funding from News Ltd also?). And will continue to be propped up in years to come, ironic indeed.

You dont see the irony in clubs crying poor considering what the business theyre in does to some families.

Anyway doesnt really bother me where clubs get there money from just dont cry poor when, in 2010, your just now trying to find other revenue streams.

And btw not really, NEWS would just keep that money in there pocket if they didnt give it too the Storm.

No we never went ahead with it. The fan/sponsor backlash was enormous. Some say it was the reason for Canavan being replaced by Noyce.

It wouldn't surprise me if this article wasn't timed to provide a boost in season ticket memberships, which isn't a bad thing.

But the answer really is simple - cut a better TV deal next time and direct some of that extra money to the clubs to make up for the shortfall in loss of pokie revenue.

The thing is, people look at television as being the single solution to all our financial issues. An increase in television revenue will most likely end up in an increased salary cap (to fend off other sports poaching our players) and the top 100 established players (and their agents) will be the beneficiaries. The clubs will use the money to update badly needed ground renovations or to add in new training facilities for elite players etc.

Junior development and community projects (the main losers in the lower poker machine revenues) will be so far down the ladder of conscious thought it will be well beyond funny.

We have a robust product because of Junior development. Why else would other codes look to ours for their talent pools?

Television is a part of the answer, but it's not the entire solution.

Higher taxation by the government means that money earned by Rugby League clubs for Rugby League goes elsewhere. Say, the funding of a new GWS AFL franchise, or to pay the salary of some State Labor politician who allows unchecked property development where it's not wanted in return for party funding so they can remain in power.

This need to draw more funds away from our sport is purely because the State Government is so f**king inept. They presided over the biggest glut of government income in the history of our State (stamp duty from the biggest property boom ever) and they spent it on what exactly? Funding themselves and their mates and increasing the size of government.

Then when they reaped a 2nd windfall from GST in return for abolishing stamp duty, they kept the stamp duties in place and the GST money too and what did NSW get? New rail lines? New roads? New schools? Well, no they'd spent all that money and then the housing boom ended and they needed to rob whatever they could from wherever they could.

The NSW State government are the most inept pack of losers in the history of government and Rugby League is having to fund them because they've run out of anyone else to rob. f**k them and f**k their taxes.

I'm not a fan of gambling, in fact I hate it. But I'd rather the revenue raised from the evil went somewhere useful rather than on things we dont want.

Yes clubs need to find other ways of raising funds and memberships are now ALL important as is television and local forms of advertising ie at the stadiums etc. We need proper businessmen running the game and coming up with proper business plans. We're all agreed on that. But we should be far more angry about the way NSW State Labor has treated the working mans game. They're robbing us f**king blind.

PS Bluebags, I'm not having a go at you with all that sweary talk, it's just those robbing bastards in government get my blood really boiling.

Oh and for anyone else, who thinks I'm a Liberal lacky, I'm not. I voted Labor at the Federal election. I just think the State government are completely inept. I'd abolish state government given half a chance.

ha ha, tool.

If the Leagues clubs want to lay claim to being there for their communities then that is where they should be putting the majority of their money, not into multi million$ sports businesses. For example in 7-08 the Panthers Group put $4.2million into the Penrith Panthers and only $635,000 into Jnr RL. Don't bleat about not getting tax breaks when jnr RL is in fact a minor recipient compared to the big business of an NRL club, especially when it is blood money.

Noa,

You talk about irony. Surely you see the irony when you make mention of clubs crying poor, yet your club would have been dead and buried long ago if they had to operate without your sugar daddy uncle rupert. The bottom line is you are subsidised unfairly. All clubs are the product, yet the company that "owns" the game only pours funds derived from that product into your club.
