NRL Coming To NZ Schools

Some corrections on Hamilton Boys - it's a state school, it's free. The 20k is for international students and they have a boarding hostel which is about 13k a year.
Sweet, thanks for the correction. When you say state school that's free, is that literally free or is it like Auckland Grammar state school free, with their 2k annual "donation"

But your point stands, it's a top rugby school and if you choose to send your school there, and want your kid to play rugby than you're exactly right, it's rich to complain when the school wants them to commit to the team and not miss matches, trainings and meetings to go to Warriors camps.

@Wheeled Warrior No need for the sarcastic "perfect place", sucks that it happened in your area, but it doesn't happen everywhere. This is how stupid the media beat up has been, in one article (opinion piece) they bemoan that kids are being banned from league, in another one a few days later they're going on about how many Warriors juniors go to rugby schools, while pretending it hasn't been that way for years.

@Beavers Headgear I loved the Lion Red Cup, had a few mates in the HB Unicorns and my Mum's mate was their treasurer so I went to all their home games and a few away ones when I was at uni.
Well these things aren't so prominant in Wellington. Too many staunch clubs here to lay down and let union rule with an iron fist. We all know most kids play each code and alternate between each game during the week. Some regions have been forced into one way or the highway and that's not a media beat up. Try and get out more and talk with clubs and schools to get a wider POV. It sounds lovely where you are from, perhaps the rest of the nation could learn a thing or two.

I'm not sure what the donation is, but I doubt it's 2k. But it's a public boys school so theoretically free.

In all honesty I've got friends from other regions who didn't experience the forever war you're having. In most of them league is a Sunday club game so there's no issues.

My cousin worked for ENZED so I had a membership for the Counties Manukau Heroes even though I lived in Christchurch

Matua I'm from Hastings (Havelock North) and league was definitely the 'poor cousin' when I was growing up. It sounds like things have changed and that's great to hear.

I've just contacted my brother. A few years ago I sent him a little piece I wrote - off-the-cuff - about attending league matches in the Bay. I hope he kept it because I've lost it and want to post it here.

I wasn''t claiming it wasn't the poor cousin rich boy @Blair ;) (I'm from Flaxmere originally), but there was never any issue playing league from a school point of view and a bunch of us played both.

FIngers crossed you find the piece you wrote.

I'm not experiencing anything in my region. I am not even involved at the school level in either union or league. This is occurring in other parts of NZ. Although some of these areas are rugby union strongholds, rugby league is still getting the poor cousin treatment. This is why I strongly support the Warriors finally setting up the junior pathways and creating a proper system to get the very best talent. There will be a few rugby union families upset with their sons and daughters opting to play rugby league in the next few years.
