NRL fails again

When all of our 12 players were suspended following Vaughan's BBQ we were told we still had to field a competitive team each week and therefore couldn't drop them all at once or even 6 at a time.
So how come South Sydney can drop 6 or so of their best players and literally field a reserve grade side against us?
It is an insult to the Dragons and I hope we can find some passion again to take it to the Bunnies.
Rules for some and different rules for others.

See your point Nanadragon , however our boys went and done something naughty therefore the NRL big boys had to wield the whip .

Those dastardly wabbits are as pure as the new born snow and have committed no sin , therefore the leniency shown to them .

Although it may be a insult it has been happening for many years now - just wished that we were in their position , I would be able to sleep much easier at night .

In a wide-ranging interview, the Roosters chairman called for the NRL to put an end to blow-out scores.

“The other seven or eight clubs at the bottom, their fans will get pissed off and turn off the TV,” Politis said. “You can’t keep watching your team losing by 30-60 points each week. That’s the thing I am always arguing with the NRL. We need to go back to the game we had for 100-odd years.

“Its all about attack (now). It’s wonderful if you’re supporting one of the (top teams).

“Right now we can all predict next year’s outcome. The four or five clubs will be at the top. There will not be a change. Hopefully it’s going to be corrected.”

Yep. I said much the same myself somewhere on this forum.

I've got a lot of respect for Politis.

in the mid 90's the Roosters and Dragons were both on the rack, and talks of a potential merger between them.

Look at the paths of both clubs since. They couldn't be more opposite. If only Politis was a Dragon...

He's 100% right in that quote above. And his club is one of the powerhouses of the modern era. The man is talking sense here.

As for dropping players like souths have, resting before finals etc, don't see the issue personally.

It's a good point - we could have just played our reserve grade side for one game, copped a big loss and moved on, which is what Parramatta for one is doing this weekend.
IIRC at the time we weren't able to do that because the reserve grade players were outside the bubble and would have to quarantine etc.
As for the clubs doing it now, has the protocols changed since then?

Well I must confess that Politis comments surprised me . I always thought that he was happy with the status quo , with the money teams at the top of the competition .

So it is most refreshing to hear his thoughts that the NRL has taken the game in the wrong direction and needs to be changed quickly before they lose fans .

Well spoken Nick !

Although Politis would have the Rooster's at the top of his thinking, he is smart enough to know that you need a strong overall competition so everyone can benefit. As it stands, only 3 or 4 teams are genuine chances of winning the comp and it's the same ones year after year, with little change. Although in European football you will find in most countries its much the same however the big difference is supporters there are rusted on from generation to generation and also don't have other football codes to compete against.

Each team was allowed to take a squad of 30 to the QLD bubble. Most teams would have taken 'reserve' grade or even some youngsters for opposed sessions etc.

We, I believe, took a squad of only 28. 12 of those became suspended players, so we were not "permitted" to field a squad of 16.

Also, this terminology (this not directed at you This Year) of 'resting' players, has been around for ages, however, for me, it's more about those guaranteed a finals berth, 'insuring' their main 17 isn't hit by injury (Joey Manu springs to mind) or suspensions (Latrell). If we were guaranteed a finals spot, we would probably do it as well.

Each team has a squad of 30 contracted players + DS + T&T's. They are not park footballers.

I'm too young to know what it was like during the 11 in a row - what was the sentiment back then? Surely there must have been a similar feeling amongst the opposition supporters? Sure the blowouts may not have been as often, but there were still blow outs based on some of the season results I've looked at.

Interestingly the beloved grandson got me to play in his Supercoach comp this year.

We have battled out with others all year and have made it through to the GF this weekend which is fantastic as we have both managed our teams very well.

All of a sudden we both have 8 or 9 players less to draw from due to the vagaries of last round selections.

A real piss off and has taken the enjoyment right out of it and that is not just for us but no doubt anyone who bothered to enter in that competition and is playing their GF's this weekend.

Not happy Jan.

It was a ten team Sydney comp with fierce tribalism and plenty of animosity.

I wasn't around for all 11 (did go to the last 3 GF's of the great run) but fair to say that St G continually winning brought the crowds in droves to the SCG and of course KJO on the odd occasions we played in the hope that the mighty StG could be beaten.

The hatred was palpable and the envy even more-so and that's what made you love your team regardless of which one it was.

Everything about the game day experience was different and better

Run on the field and get an autograph after FT (get a corner post if you were quick enough)
Touch and talk to your heroes
Kick the footy with your mates on the very dirt your team just played on.

Were there blow outs sure but not like it is today and a good barney on the paddock certainly made up for any sorrow you might have about the scoreline and being Sydney based you could go to every venue by public transport and support your team regardless of how bad they were going.
