how hard is it ... 16 teams is perfect for running a knock out comp ...

8 games in the first week (one of these always the charity shield and any other regular trial games)

Winning 8 go into another round
The losing 8 have a 2nd round playing for the "plate"

This guarantees 2 pre season games for all teams, 3games for 8 teams and 4 games for 4 teams. It also means that there are 22 games of footy that the NRL can take to regional centres or non traditional NRL markets ...

22 games of footy that sponsors can get exposure for on pay TV ...

I repeat .. how hard is it ...

Because they are trials you can play with modified interchange rules ie have 8 interchange players with unlimited interchanges or something ... Gets more players into the game but also gives the spectators something to watch.

NRL ... get your hands off your dicks and start trying to market the game ...

Super 14s have started, AFL are playing Televised trials ...

of course ... it makes so much sense ..

Rugby and AFL a julready have the jump on league in terms of exposure and sponsorship ...

all teams play 2-3 trials so it is not a huge jump in the number of games played .. it engages all the fans who are desparate and opens up another revunue stream for advertising/telecasting ..

sometimes i think the NRL are on autopilot

The NRL has no vision.. We will probably have to convert to Rugby or AFL in the next 20 years coz if we dont start promoting our game it will become extinct. Esp now that AFL are introducing another team to Sydney..

It has nothing to do with the NRL being on auto-pilot. The clubs and especially their football departments don't want a organised competitive pre-season competition. They do not consider a competition that requires them to play games to actually try and win as the best preparation for round 1 of a 26 round marathon.

The problem is that commercial sponsorship and broadcast contracts bring commercial obligation. The clubs and specifically their football departments don't want that. They want to be able to play their stars for 30 mins and then put on the second stringers. Or spend the entire game rotating thru every combination in the club to see what works. They don't want their pre-season to be a string a games where the commercial imperative is to focus on winning. They want their pre-season to allow them to get the team right for opening night of the premiership - right combinations, right defensive patterns, right attacking plans, right physically, right mentally. The final score is secondary. They want to spend their pre-season experimenting so they are ready for the long haul to win the premiership. There's simply no way you can package that so it can be sold for any significant price - they will still be trials. And in a professional era where clubs make or lose multiple millions of dollars based solely on how they perform in the premiership, a couple hundred thousand here or there for a pre-season comp isn't really going to make much difference to the club management's opinion of the exercise if it means their coaching staff can't give the club what they see as the best preparation possible for the main event.

I Disagree. Its a good idea that works for the AFL but geez they have a hell of alot more players then us on the field, there for easier to replace. Chris Judd is a good player In AFL but can easily be replaced, a player like Darren Lockyer is not as in a game of League, one or 2 players get the ball more then the others. In AFL, possesion is almost equal.

I would like to see the sevens brought back, its commercialable (if promoted properly) and its only 2 days(but I think it should be moved down to 1), there is no large forwards running at people and its completely unique. It still has that risk of injury but there is a risk of injury for every game of footy thats played.

If it is split into 4 groups of 5 with 4 NRL teams in each pool and with a combined South Australia team, a combined Western Australia team, a combined Northern Territory team and a combined Victorian team to fill the gaps. 20 minute games, each team is guarenteed of playing 80 mintes. The 1st team from each pool going into the semi finals and the winner of that play for $150 000 dollars for the winning club. A total of 43 matches. Over 2 days I think its a better idea.

Agreed, and i believe easts are the defending champions, the cheap arse NRL can get over to bondi junction, ask the roosters for the craven mild cup or whatever it was back then, and just slap harvey norman or pepsi over the top!

trials are meaningless ... winning isn't important

super 14s will be finished very soon

& AFL is all smoke & mirrors

trials may be meaningles but clubs still have them, i think thats the point most people make since their being played anyways organise them into a proper comp so it has more exposure

i think the games should be quaters, as with the nab cup the nrl can experiment with rules, a play off for all cubs being knocked out in round 1, all games in regional areas

I agree we need a formatted pre-season but copying the NAB Cup in the AFL isn't the way to go.

Remember the AFL plays only 22 competiton games before the finals .... we play 25 plus for the very best 3 State of Origin games and a Test match.
I went to the Federation Cup match last night and really enjoyed it even though the Roosters were at full strength in the 1st half and the Tigers at full stregth in the 2nd half. By the way how many people could tell me without looking it up who played who in this weeks AFL?

What about a 32 team knockout competition with the best teams from the country and JB cup and QRL invited to play. In the first week all non NRL teams host the matches.

*All sides would be allowed 23 players (10 on the bench) with unlimited interchange.
*If an NRL side plays another NRL club the match would be played in the Bush.
*The final to be played at Gosford.
*Premiers don't get an invite due to WCC

Or something like this, it wouldn't mean much to the clubs but it would for the game.

The warm up games are just that, pointless pre season competitions like lolafl run really dont get anyone interested. Id prefer the guys just have some light warm ups away from the spotlight and be ready for the main event.

As mentioned before, the NRL raises to the clubs every year over bringing back a pre-season tournament, but every year the clubs vote against it.

Most clubs now want to make their trials profitable events, hence playing them in the city rather than the bush. The NRL trys to get around this with the Community Carnival, so at least forcing clubs to head to rural areas, but that was put on hold this year due to all the Centenary events happening.

So yeah, if you want a pre-season tournament to return, pressure your club to say they want it.
