NRL online coverage overseas is terrible

I have been in the uk for a few weeks and have been trying to keep track of the final rounds and first week of the finals, i have encountered several problems

1. cannot watch highlights on nrl.com. i can watch super league nhl and nfl highlights on their website from anywhere in the world.

2. no bigpond nrl channel on youtube with highlights while there is an afl equivalent. the nrl had one in previous seasons but stopped updating after the opening rounds 2012!

3. nrl is stuck on premier sports on tv which not many people know about and requires an extra subscription. afl is on espn which is not a standard sports package channel but it is still more visible

this situation needs sorted out urgently and you also cant access livenrl.tv in the uk so the whole situation is garbage or a sport in this digital era.

i hope the ARLC see this but i think i i will drop them a letter or email to explain

India is your friend! No end of cheap websites where you can watch live sport from all over the world. Used to watch SL on it before Eurosport started showing it live here.

should say as well that telstra and the nrl seem to have refined the art of removing highlighys from youtube to the point where there is just none at all from this season from other sources

When I lived in Europe I used livenrl.tv and the coverage was great, HD-like. Sunday 3pm game was live too and so were both Friday games. But because it's on Premier Sports in the UK you can't watch it on livenrl.tv.

Are you living in the UK? I recommend you maybe take out a VPN or something similar that'll then allow you to use livenrl.tv

Telstra and big pond must be two of the most ass backwards internet companies in the world. Trying to maintain a propiertary video service in this day and age is laughable when its as badly executed as it is. I honestly remember websites in 1998 that were better

I use hidemyass vpn to use Netflix. It's like $4 a month. Easy as to use off you need to get on.

No good for the average Joe who doesn't wanna jump through hoops though. As much as i hate saying it, we should at least be on afl's level.

I disagree. livenrl.tv has been mentioned previously and is a great site. Not only has some live games, but stores each game through the year to watch when you want.

Watching live NRL in the UK isn't always an option if you want a sleep in/have a hangover etc. Also unlike Fox, you pay for that only...you aren't required to take (and pay for) additional channels you never watch.

No ads is another plus.

What is a shambles is the UK's coverage of their very own Super League.

I moved to the uk a few weeks ago, got sky hooked up just before round 25. Fired off an email to premier sports to see if they had the finals rights (f**k paying for it to get 1 or 2 rounds if i was lucky). Didnt get a reply and turns out they do.

Websites are your friend to watch games. I watch probably 3 or 4 games a week live. To watch highlights if you go to a clubs website you get the highlights you cant watch on nrl.com. Watch them change that now though!

I've recently purchased NFL Gamepass for the upcoming season, and it is absolutely amazing.

Surely it wouldn't be impossible for the NRL to create something like that.

I live in Belgium and just stick to the (I assume illegal) live streams, but share your sentiments that it is total crap we can't see highlights on nrl.com or foxsports et al. I can see highlights on the Daily Telegraph's site though (which are the foxsports highlights).

Does anybody know the fastest way to get Across The Tassman?

I wonder if you could theoretically swim Across The Tasman?

I have a terrible cough. And my left eye keeps winking uncrontrollably. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I wonder.

ESPN is actually standard with a few cable packs iirc.

The highlights situation on nrl.com is ridiculous, I can't see the justification.

Nope, 3 months free if you sign up for sky sports but need to give them a months notice to cancel. Got the date saved in the phone lol.

Yeh either, but just have to watch it on the clubs sites. Sucks can't use the smart player thing to watch certain parts (i.e. gallen getting owned by papali) so I usually have to go across the tasman for that.

And tell me about Youtube. I rage supreme at the inaccessibility of highlighted videos for overseas users.

If the NRL sell their rights to bigpond again there needs to be a clause whereby they open up the highlights to international viewers, for free.

As for the relative obscurity of Premier Sports, I'd take it over 1 or 2 games a week on ESPN or Sky Sports. Premier Sports looks to be a growing station with a decent enough focus on "niche" sports. Financially it might not be best, and they might not have the image of an ESPN, but ESPN are shit and that could soon change.

With Premier Sports British people get better access to live NRL than most of Australia, going off what I've heard on here about NRL coverage down under.

Pretty much the same situation in the US. I subscribe to LiveNrl.com but this year has been bad. FoxSoccer has a contract with the NRL so not all games are shown on LiveNRL because they are shown on FoxSoccer..problem is..it's a remote Sat channel that not all Sats offer..and if you have cable (like I do) you have to depend on illegal websites to stream the games.

I have come to depend on Across the Tasman which has torrents of all the games and also shows. I can't watch them live (had to watch all the Dragon games on streams because apparently Fox Soccer showed them all ..LiveNRL certainly did not) but they are pretty good at uploading the games and shows within 24 hours.

I seriously doubt I will extend my subscription to LiveNRL..why pay for something you don't get to watch.

What is a shambles is the UK's coverage of their very own Super League.

Unless the game clashes with some other broadcasting deal. When I lived overseas, they would randomly cancel games an hour before kickoff, change schedules without any notice... Simply because setanta decided to pick up the game (I was living in Canada). Then there was times that it wasn't shown on setanta (even if it wasn't live) and still no game without any explanation (funnily enough it was shown on fox football channel in the US when these games weren't available, shame you can't get the channel in Canada)

$20/month it cost, and at one point there was 1 live game in 2 rounds. It was awesome waking up at 3am on friday morning to find your game was canceled. Then there was the support email service, which replied with a canned reply, repeatedly, I actually had to email the NRL direct to get a response, not livenrl.tv.

They should have paid the guys at nrlfix.com instead of threatening legal action... Most streams were in HD, and it wasn't a disorganised piece of crap. Hopefully the new broadcasting deal fixes many of the issues, because the service is pretty lacklustre unless you're in the UK or Asia.

In the end, it just wasn't worth the effort, so I bought a slingbox and mailed it back to my parents in Australia.

I have gamepass too and IMO, the NRL are at least 15 years behind the NFL when it comes to coverage, maybe eve further. There is no way the NRL will replicate something similar to gamepass within ten years. One, it won't have the subscriber base and two, Channel Nine suck balls when it comes to technology.
