Nrl plans for a 20 team comp

Yes ..your first point is true of those two teams … the strategy of requiring significant third party investment ( in these cases Govt investment) seems to have worked for the NRL in those two areas but it’s not going to work everywhere ,,,, perhaps part of the thinking is that there is considerable risk with expanding to Perth and particularly PNG which needed to be subsidised…. There is obviously no chance that PNG would even be seriously considered if not for Albo’s money

I think NZ 2 could be considered a little more like The Dolphins which was admitted on the cheap… it’s a much more positive RL environment amongst the locals than Perth … Christchurch and Dunedin have good stadiums already in place … and they aren’t starting from close to scratch in respect of quality Juniors ( although of course there is much more work to be done )… would leave money to be provided for the COE which I assume some level of Gov would provide …

The NRL also need to be getting future NRL players from somewhere… and I suggest NZ is much better set up to provide these than Perth ( for decades) and even PNG will take a while…. This might make the NRL a little more open to the idea to bring them in on the cheap …
Take out the stadium funding for wa and the state govt isn’t investing much at all into league

Nz has had govts fund two amazing stadiums for chch to play from

Probably will still be $160m for “junior development “ and the new COE ….nothing to be sneezed at
Nothing special

Nz has juniors anyway so don’t need a govt commitment to get afl rejects who have the wrong body type for league

I would argue even with the money wa govt is spending on Perth bears that chch is already ahead of them but Pvl seems committed on wa for whatever reason

I admire people's enthusiasm when it comes to NRL expansion.

But moving beyond 20 teams is decades off. We wouldn't have got team 18 without government intervention and the rigmarole that is the Perthern Bears keeps going on.

Team 20 is likely to be another saga.

What the NRL needs is, dare I use the super league term, a vision. A sub committee, a working group, whatever; this is what we want to look like in X years time, this is where we think technology is heading etc.

yes …I agree …. At least 20 years before further expansion sounds about right …they would have had a period of expanding from 16 to 20 teams in about a decade ( or less) so a 20 year period of consolation seems reasonable…

I also agree that the NRL’s expansion strategy seems ad hoc.. but at least they have some appetite for it after 20 years of not much happening

Probably got something to do with money and a pro league supportive premier. Opportunity for WA government to back a RL team may not occur again or at least in our lifetime. NZ will probably always be there and current NZ bids may not be offering the money that PVL wants and don't have a sound enough business case.

Getting some strategies in place for cities that may get a team one day would be a good start. Look towards building good relationships with governments, growing the fan bases and building commercial partnerships in those cities left that will be in the mix if further expansion occurs.

You can probably narrow it down to South Island NZ, Ipswich, Adelaide, Wellington, Fiji, Sunshine Coast & CQ at this stage.

Nrl was at 20 teams in 1995

Population of Australia has increased from 18 million to 26.6 million

Afl has expanded from 16 to soon 19

There was no a league or super rugby (just started)

Once Perth is bedded down then they have to add Adelaide to tick that box (“national sport”) plus another bris team

Then you get get outlandish bids like

Fiji
Wellington
Hawaii was a very interesting idea
Japan
Png2 / regional png

Nrl will be drawing players from areas with a combined population of 50 million

Even if you ignore the fumbler states it can easily support the number of teams

Wouldn’t surprise me if the plan is for the NRL to own it to start once they are getting close to offloading Perth. The bids don’t seem to have impressed the NRL.

There’ll be a case for Sunshine Coast by then. By the 2040s they’ll have over 500k population and a partially upgraded stadium that won’t cost too much more to upgrade fully. The stadium should have heavy and light rail connections from other parts of Sunshine Coast & down to Brisbane if all goes to plan.

In saying that Ipswich will probably get the next QLD team if/when there is one, hard to see there being 2 more.
