NRL stays in league with Macquarie

The National Rugby League has agreed to a pay cut to keep Macquarie on side, writes Neil Shoebridge.

Macquairie Radio Network and the National Rugby League are wrapping up a radio broadcasting rights deal that will give the NRL less revenue and reduced coverage in regional NSW and Queensland but will ensure Macquarie remains its ally.
NRL executives would not comment on the negotiations for a three-year radio rights deal, which will take effect from the start of the 2006 competition.
But sources close to the talks claimed that the NRL had abandoned the idea of splitting the rights between incumbent Macquarie Radio Network, the owner of Sydney's 2GB and 2CH, and Broadcast Operations, which owns Sydney's 2SM and which now buys NRL coverage from Macquarie for its 33 regional stations.
Instead, the NRL is belived to have agreed to strike another exclusive contract with Macquarie, which is controlled by John Singelton and whose 2GB station is home to announcers such as Alan Jones and Ray Hadley.
Under the new contract, Macquarie will pay an estimated $500,000 in cash and $500,000 in free ads on 2GB, a year, down from $750,000 in cash and $750,000 in kind under its current contract.
Broadcast operations had bid $200,000 in cash and $200,000 in kind for the Sydney and Brisbane rights to one Sunday match and the regional rights to all NRL matches.
A spokesman for Broadcast Operations said its owner, Bill Caralis, would refuse to deal with Macquarie, which would make it difficult for the NRL to secure regional radio coverage.
Broadcast Operations now plans to produce a five-hour sports program on Saturdays and Sundays for its regional stations.
Until last week the NRL was planning to sell the Sydney and Brisbane rights to Saturday afternoon matches, one Sunday match, State of Origin games and the final series to Macquarie, enabling the radio company to cut its NRL rights costs from 1.5 million a year to $800,000.
But Macquarie executives were believed to be unhappy about Broadcast Operations taking control of regional coverage and broadcasting a game in Sydney via 2SM.
"2GB is a very influential station in Sydney," said one source.
"Obviously the NRL didn't want to put it offside."
Macquarie chief executive Angela Clarke was not available for comment.
Macquarie will now pay an estimated $1 million for the NRL rights, compared with the estimated $1.2 million the NRL could have secured by doing a deal with Macquarie and Broadcast Operations.
The latter is believed to have made a final offer to the NRL late last wek, which was rejected.
"In addition to finding a way to keep Macquarie happy, the NRL has been under pressure to do a deal now," said a source.
"It had to resolve the rights negotions to give Macquarie time to start selling sponsorships to its 2006 coverage."

What is the best email address to fire off our dismay to the NRL. What the hell happened to an FM station??? Why is the NRL doing this to its fans.

Less money, less coverage.

What a joke our administrators are. Fancy getting pushed around by a radio network that treats the game like sh*t anyway.

My thoughts exactly.

Disgrace is too soft a word to describe it.

If you think Hadley is out of control now, wait until next season. Rugby League is now the worst administrated sport in Australia.

Gallop has to go. All this bullsh*t about the game being strong enough to bargain he keep harping on about and then he does this.

unbelieveable... the game gets into strong positions, only to be held down by the administrators!!! What a f**king joke!!! Not only have they sold out by sticking with the exclusive deal, but for LESS money and WORSE coverage!! That is just plain crazy. Surely, if a company wants exclusivity, they pay a premium for it. Apparently not when Rugby League administrators are involved!

This on top of the Soccer result last night is a bad sign for the game in this country!!

The only reason I can see this happening is to keep gurkins like alan jones and hadley from bringing the game down through there talk.

That article was dead right in one aspect in that 2gb is VERY influential in Sydney. Dont underestimate how many people listen to and soil themselves over jones and lately hadley.

For the sake of a very small more amount of cash and much much better coverage they have gone with sh*tty coverage but better exposure from the biggest radio rating/talk back morons in Sydney.

Having that station crap on negatively about league every day is obviously something the NRL feared.

I've supported Gallop all the way until this day. I thought he was our great hope, but this is baffling.

I don't understand it. Are they really that dumb? Really?

Don't think for one minute that everything Hadley says about the game is positive. he is the first clown to sensationalise trivial matters into massive drama. The guy couln't give a toss about the game. The NRL have lost me. Gallop has lost all credo. So much for the game being in great position to bargain.

We Bulldogs fans have been saying for years that Gallop has no idea. Good to see he is finally proving it to the rest of the Rugby League community as well.

Iggy I don't think I've ever seen you make a post that wasn't about something you might percieve as a threat to rugby league

Don't know how much weight this holds, but the Panthers website has it all stitched up...

MACQUARIE RETAINS EXCLUSIVE NRL COMMERCIAL RADIO RIGHTS

Nov 17 - The NRL today agreed to terms with the Macquarie Radio Network to continue exclusive commercial radio coverage for season 2006.

2GB’s Continuous Call Team, led by Ray Hadley, will again broadcast matches each weekend both in metropolitan Sydney and regionally.

“It’s been a strong partnership, and after such a successful year in 2005, it is certainly one that is worth maintaining,” NRL CEO David Gallop said today. “There will clearly be some new opportunities in 2007 when we move to 16 teams and two extra radio broadcasts (Friday and Monday).

“In the meantime we would expect under this agreement to see little reason for change to the successful arrangements that have been offered in 2005.”

The NRL has confirmed that the ABC will retain its rights to non-commercial broadcasts.

I cannot believe the NRL has not been itching to find more professional and wide spread coverage than the neanderthal hacks that currently dumb down their listeners even further with every broadcast. Shame Gallop, Shame....
