The only reason I can see this happening is to keep gurkins like alan jones and hadley from bringing the game down through there talk.

That article was dead right in one aspect in that 2gb is VERY influential in Sydney. Dont underestimate how many people listen to and soil themselves over jones and lately hadley.

For the sake of a very small more amount of cash and much much better coverage they have gone with sh*tty coverage but better exposure from the biggest radio rating/talk back morons in Sydney.

Having that station crap on negatively about league every day is obviously something the NRL feared.

I thought they were mostly influential with the blue rinse set?

It's the young kids/adults that Gallop should care about and the majority of them listen to FM not AM!!!

Im not sure what the blue rinse set is, but I have been very suprised at how many men in there mid 20's listen to that AM talkback, one sided, over hype an issue crap.

I hate the deal. Howvr, yakstorm has a bloody good point.

Th key is that it's for one year. ONe year deals are only signed if someon is planning major changes for the following year. Example - Preston Campbell looking for a 1 year deal for '06, because in 07 he's off to the Titans.

On the face of it, a strong code run by a media organisation making such a poor deal is beyond belief. There HAS to be more to it.

We will know either way in a year.

I don't mind the ABC's coverage....I mean, anything but Hadley's show really. Everyone has mentioned the stupidity and boringness of the songs and stuff, but what about the politics and rudeness of it? Every opinion seems to have an agenda behind it, and in the brief amount of time i spent listening to the show, I couldn't believe how rude he was to some of the callers. And what's with some of those songs anyway? They are supposed to be gee-ups, but some of the stuff is really mean-spirited and nasty (anyone remember that song about Barry Gomersall a few years ago?). Competition please!

It's a gutter show and you are right about the gee-ups, they are more than that in many cases. Agendas left right and centre, but the Ray Hadley followers (many of whom don't care for RL) just lap it up. The Gomersall stuff was the last straw for me. It was more than just trying to be funny, it was pretty hurtful stuff for the bloke and his wife. That whole song sums up what Hadley's about.

In the late 80’s, 2JJJ introduced Roy and HJ calling the Saturday “Live” ABC game off the box for their radio station. It was meant to take the piss out of Rugby League and had the opposite effect in attracting 20 something’s to Rugby League. In the 80’s, Rugby League games were a no go zone for women. With the Tina Turner Ads and 2JJJ, the perception of Rugby League changed.

Sydney has the most diverse radio market in Australia. 2GB represents one demographic on the AM band. Forget 2UE, 2KY, 2SM and 2CH for a moment. The NRL are missing out on the youth market with TODAY FM, NOVA, 2JJJ and 2MMM. They are also missing out of the over 30’s who don’t like talkback on AM with 2WS FM, MIX FM and VEGA FM. On all of the FM stations, how many presenters and sports reporters would be pro Rugby League? Is there one? There is one common thread that comes out of the mouths of every AFL friendly presenter or sports reporter on Sydney radio. They all say Sydney is big enough for all football codes. Totally opposite to what they would be saying if they stayed in Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart or Perth.

The NRL in trying to control debate on Rugby League have achieved the opposite.

Radio to me is an important medium to get information and be entertained with Rugby League. I don’t spend all my life in front of a TV screen. If I’m working in the backyard of a weekend, I like to listen to the radio. I want to listen to Rugby League debate and interviews. Sometimes, you have to go out of a night and in the car I like to listen to the call, especially the Friday night call and the Saturday 7.30pm call. Taxis are ferrying thousands of people around on a Friday and Saturday night and have no access for them and there customers to listen. I go to about 15 matches a season. I like Friday and Saturday Night Football. I like to take my radio and listen to the call and have all the advantages as the viewer at home who knows the latest changes on the sideline or who is replacing who and who is the new rookie.

The NRL and other sports in the next few years are heading into a very lucrative market with downloads onto 3G wireless technology. The only way you can get score updates to certain games now is with their crappy NRL Wireless service which you have to pay for.
With a combined $100m TV contract, this radio contract is a piddle I the ocean compared to the money the NRL make, not to mention merchandising, ticket sales and sponsorship. The NRL should not be allowed to get away with this substandard radio deal, even if it is for one year,

And just because the game is on FM, they'll listen? I mean, that's a lame argument. If an FM talk station started with Alan Jones doing breakfast, it's not like he would attract a young audience by doing so.

The decision isn't great bit it's a one year deal. Clearly the interest was not overly strong from the other networks - or not strong enough for the NRL to award rights elsewhere.

2UE have a strong afternoon program as it is, and in reality I don't think the other networks that showed interest were really ever that serious.

Yes, if there was open rights 2WS, MIX, VEGA, TODAY, NOVA AND 2JJJ would be calling rugby league all weekend. NOT.

2MMM realise they have a bit of a league market and hence showed interest in open rights FOR ONE GAME PER WEEK but no FM station has ever expressed major interest in the code when there were open rights, or when the possibility arose again recently.

The other networks would not risk 12 hours per weekend of losing their music audience for rugby league, especially given the money they have to spend.

At the end of the day, if FM listeners want to listen to league, they'll flick the switch over to AM and listen to 2GB or the ABC.

One of the reasons 2GB has been an incredible success in recent years is because of the young market they have been able to capture with the way they present the show.

Young market my arse, more like brain dead market. Oh the 2UE arvo show was dragging in better ratings at the end last season.

Bottom line is the NRL are crazy not to get their product on as many stations as possible. 2UE have been every keen to call games in the past, but were ticked off with the NRL and no longer have an interest. The same will happen with 2SM and MMM if the NRL continue with their current policy. The money involved in exclusivity is simply not worth it compared the bigger picture. Their must be some other issues that ensure the NRL comfortable in handing sole comm rights to a station that barely talks football.

2UE now call rugby union and MMM call Swans games.

Well done NRL!

Good call Einstein! I also could never see MIX, TODAY, VEGA or NOVA calling weekend Rugby League. I was trying to show that the radio market has diversified since the late 80’s when there was only two commercial FM Stations. In the late 80’s, 2MMM dominated Sydney Radio as 2SM dominated Sydney radio with Rock Music in the 70’s. In the 70’s, 2SM interrupted their music coverage on a weekend to dominate the rating with Frank Hyde calling Rugby League. If the league approached FM stations, I could see 2MMM, 2WS or JJJ being interested. Even JJJ, considered Roy and HJ run a show on Sunday afternoons based on sport.

Why would anyone express an interest with the way the NRL have treated 2UE’s requests? 2UE run a 2 hour nightly sports show and can’t get a look in. 2MMM and 2WS run sport shows of a Saturday morning. 2MMM win the Saturday morning 9.00am-11.00am timeslot on their sports show. 2MMM is no long a market leader but their Saturday morning sport with Ray Warren delivers them a ratings win. Isn’t funny that “A View From The Hill” delivers good ratings for a community station like 2SER FM.

2MMM have no trouble in interrupting their music program to call Swans matches on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Don’t tell me they are rating success’s.

Do you work for the NRL or 2GB?

Your kidding. The Rugby League radio is half of what it was 15 years ago. 2GB is beaten at times over the weekend by two old blokes on 2UE talking about nothing

BS, they appeal to the 50+ crowd who have their radio's switched to 2GB all week to listen to the propoganda that idiots like Hadley and Alan Jones dribble about.. Young market my arse.. Quite obviously you are employed by 2GB..

Absolutely spot on. 2GB were beaten considerably late in the season by 2UE. What happened to the NRL wanting to get as much coverage across NSW as possible for the game. If you read the article in the Herald it shows - through the amount of money offered by 2SM- that they weer very serious about gaining some broadcast rights for the NRL.

2SM there own sports show Monday to Friday - Talkin' Sport and hoped to put together a great Rugby League Program on the weekend with calling the game the icing on the cake. Sydney and Country listeners are crying out for a balanced Rugby League program on the weekends. Lets hope it happens sooner rather than later with other sports challenging in this tough market place.

The other interesting point about the rights isue is that 2GB and inparticular Hadley will now no longer be going to the Broadcast Operations (2SM) Network stations throughout NSW and Queensland - This will surely affect Hadleys ratings and 2GB's ability to sell.
