You know this could have some merit,
If they merged the blues and moana (as Pacifica), kept the remaining NzRu clubs as is, port over western force.
Adding to that fiji, along with the rest of the NRL it would solve a lot of expansion areas in one massive fowl swoop... only Adelaide left, even then the comp would get to 24 clubs...
Reds could stay as qld5 making it 25 clubs, just punt the warratahs, and brumbies...
Get the Bears in Adelaide or Victoria to make it 26
Its not a bad comp....
Then we will see All blacks vs Kangaroos or even a third state of origin team as it was in the superleague era (NZ)... its a farce to merge the codes, but having all those RU clubs in those particular areas, would make the "Rugby" League code no.1 in the southern hemisphere

The question is would SANZAAR (who administer the competition) and NZ Rugby + Rugby Australia (who own the individual teams) sell it. This is a bit like Donald Trump assuming the USA could buy Greenland.

The bigger question is why would you want to buy it? You would be taking on some serious debt, likely in the order of $50M to $100M+

So like the OP, it would be f**king stupid

I'm not sure Oz could handle the Crusaders winning year after year. It's bad enough Melbourne winning. :D

@Canard - where is this debt you're talking about coming from?

NRL should buy the Super League, not the Trabant Automobile version of rugby.

Here's example of NBA pretty much taking over what remained of competitor league;

There's talk of super league taking on displaced rugby clubs atm
Super League can’t afford a pot to piss in, let alone take over failing RU clubs.

What makes a code number 1? In many ways, RL already is the biggest code in the SH

Seriously what would be the point of this? Pure spite? Because it wouldn’t actually achieve anything. You’d get the rights to the franchise names, but not the player contracts, and a whole bunch of debt. Restarting the teams as NRL sides would just be a guaranteed failure for all except possibly the Western Force (which could pretty well slot in as the Perth expansion team). The other Australian sides would just be retired as they’re already in markets with NRL teams and their fans are rusted on Union types. The NZ sides would also fail as NRL plants and their fans would just be pissed off at the NRL and go back to following the NPC (where they’d still see the same players). You’d have much more likelihood of success in those regions by just starting a franchise from scratch.

We'd be much better off throwing cash at union grassroots clubs and converting them to RL clubs! We could double Jnrs overnight lol

When Western force was kicked out of the RU comp all those years ago, we should have swooped in and took them in, they'd be a serious powerhouse by now, at least they'd have serious competition to play against too
