Could you cherry pick teams? WA, QLD Reds, Crusaders & Hurricanes might be valuable, the rest can be NRL reserve grade teams or NSW/Qld cup teams at best

Valuable how though? Surely we wouldn't run them as Union teams?

What would you even be "buying" though?

It's not like the players have any value, and would they even want to play League?
The brand and any facilities/infrastructure… and that’s it. Like you said you wouldn’t get the player contracts and it’s debatable whether they’d be worth much anyway. And it’s also debatable whether the brand would have any value if you’ve just pissed off all their fans that want to support a Union side- probably going to get more fans and goodwill with a startup. That’s why I’d rule out doing it with any of the NZ sides, unless Super Rugby was about to completely collapse and not function as a comp. On that circumstance you could envision the Crusaders or Hurricanes wanting to continue as top flight teams.

I think Perth is the only one where it’d make any real sense. Nothing to be gained from any of the others.
Perth could have benefits, but there's no way Twiggy would sell the Force to a RL entity. So if there's a multi-sport rugby club in Perth it's likely to be RU lead, which probably wouldn't appeal to the NRL.

Canberra is the other one in Australia that could have a lot of merit. The Brumbies going under would cause all sorts of issues for the Raiders politically and in grassroots and junior development, so just on that alone it could be worth it. Add shared facilities, administration, marketing opportunities and cross promotion, etc, keeping costs down and it makes a fair amount of sense if the Raiders could get them at the right price and took it seriously as a business opportunity.

In reality the chances of either actually happening are virtually zero though. I doubt Twiggy has any interest in buying an NRL club, and I'm pretty sure that the ARU would rather see the Brumbies fold than allow the Raiders to buy them, I highly doubt the Raiders would be interested in reality anyway.

Perth's RU junior infrastructure hasn't done the Force much good lol. Higginbotham is the only really strong player I can think of that it's produced for example. Not that I'm suggesting that it's completely valueless, but with the money in the NRL building juniors infrastructure in Perth/WA that's bigger and stronger shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Time consuming and expensive for sure, but that investment would have to happen irrespective of RU juniors or the Force's existence.

On the other hand RU's grassroots in Canberra are larger than RL's despite the Brumbies struggles, and even most Raiders juniors that come from Canberra/Queanbeyan go through those RU pathways at least at some point in their development. The Raiders are basically reliant on them and losing them would effectively half the Raiders juniors base in the ACT. They couldn't be easily replaced either considering the social attitudes and history between the two codes in the region. The RU schools are never going to pick up RL for example.

Furthermore you can kiss most ACT government investment into rectangular infrastructure goodbye if the Brumbies fold. It'd be just the excuse Barr and the Labour/Greens government has been looking for to redirect most of that funding.

But again it's all academic because realistically there's no chance of either Twiggy buying an NRL license or the Raiders buying the Brumbies.

Force will be the next club to go

longer term Brumbies could go too

Can you even just "buy" this though?

Wouldn't the majority of this be reliant on volunteers, parents, kids etc. that are largely unpaid and are clearly Union fans?

Can buying an administration or team just give you carte blanche to do what you want with all its participants?

its very early days for Twiggys investment. They have 3 local kids in the aussie jnr side. A number of jnr Rl players have moved over to their elite pathway program.

How much would it cost to buy Super Rugby ?

Would a pizza and a can of coke get the deal done ?

Rfl make small profits

many super league clubs are close to bankruptcy

super league isn’t worth a lot it’s the cost of keeping clubs going

the tv deal has been going down for a while

salford are basically broke now

it would need to be 100 million pounds and even then it wouldn’t last long

It'd be interesting lf the the NRL offered a 'conversion' grant for RU clubs how many would take it at grassroots level. If NRL offered to pay insurance, kits, equipment, train coaches, NRL memberships etc for ten years how many grassroots RU clubs would swap sides? Could be a strategy in weaker RL states?
