for those who dont know, this is in the NBA. if a player plays 3 seasons with the same club, they are allowed to exceed the salary cap to keep him. this is a great idea because it promotes one club men. the only problem is that 3 years is too short, so i would make it 5 year bird rights.

Then you'll have clubs playing 16 year olds 1 game, then again at 17, then again at 18. Then they can keep their entire team cap-free for life.

I would only have it for locally produced players who play five years starting from the year they are 18.

I can't remember if it is NBA or NFL or both. But you are allowed to exceed the salary cap, but you have to pay the teams that dont spend over, double the amount or something stupid like that. Their cap is about 50mil and if they spend 60mil, they have to pay 20mil which is distributed between the poor teams.

Yeah thats the NBA Luxury Tax. $1 paid per $1 over the cap. So if your $500K over the cap, you pay 500K in that tax.

Thats right, you can't have the Bird rule unless you have the Luxury Tax... not perfect, but I think its better than what we've got now... i.e Kidding ourselves its a level playing field and everyone is spending the same.

There is an obvious issue with 5 year "Bird Rights". Clubs would heavily back end deals and would be more blatant about it. Heck Greg Inglis may have ended up with the HMAS Sirius poking out of his garage. Then you need to think about what kind of car he'd need to tow it. Maybe you can find an Independant Commissioner and talk to them about it.

Best of luck.
