Yes, he would be far too old to switch codes

On the subject of AFL players playing league, of course some of them could do it and no they wouldn't get slaughtered.

Billy Slater is two foot nothing and weighed about 50kilos when he first played for the Storm but his agility and speed meant he evaded rather than just plain hit up. Anyone looking at him when he first came to the code would have thought he'd be slaughtered and yet he wasn't. He could have played either code and we all know how well he would have done either. He was the first player to incorporate AFL jumping practice to perfect catching bombs in the air so he couldnt get tackled.

Paul Kelly played ruck rover for the Swans and would have been a great Rugby League hooker - hell he even played League up until 16 years of age as he was from the Wagga region.

League players require more attributes than a neck that ends at the shoulders and the ability to take hit up after hit up.

Why would any AFL player have the skill evade a defensive LINE, something non-existent in their sport. Some might have the necessary agility and speed but none would have the Rugby League knowledge or vision to pull off anything near what would be required to succeed at any decent level.

he's been absolutely hammered playing aussie rules as well but, you're right, not anywhere near the frequency of what he'd cop playing rugby league.
i think he'd handle himself ok with a full offseason of contact training behind him.
albeit, it's a moot point anyway; it's never going to happen.

Getting tackled is only half of the game. What about defending? How is he going to go when the opposition run their biggest forwards at him constantly.

He'd have no chance.

It's amusing how similar the postings on this board and bigfooty actually are some times, "(insert sport) is shit, no skill, no one could make it blah blah blah" whereas the more rational can see that there are definately some AFL players who could make it in league (Brown, 7 years younger, could've made a fist of it with a couple of off-seasons and a year in reserve grade, as could some others), and alot of them had they played league growing up would've been reasonable players (much likes theres some league players who, had they grown up playing AFL, would be pretty good in that code).

You can dislike a code all you want without being stupid about it.

I don't think any AFL player could make first grade Rugby League, even with two years of getting ready for it.

Mal's suggestions about the union players may be possible though. Q.Cooper can't tackle apparently, but i see no reason why James O'Connor couldn't make the switch.

except that currently one of the top paid AFL players is a RL player

unless some AFL player can do a Hunt then your point is moot

the last AFL player who tried failed at the Western Reds

Difference being that there are nuffies from all walks of life playing professional AFL at the top tier.
They had some Canuck Unionite playing not long ago. If he was any good at sports he’d be playing Ice Hockey or CFL or something else for starters. Hunt has played like 5 games and already they’re talking about how well he’s doing (This is a guy who never even kicked the ball when he played from the Broncos).

Meanwhile we’ve had RU (Garrick Morgan/Dan Herbert’s shit brother, et al) and AFL (Adrian Barich) players try and crack the NRL and fail.
Pretty sure Newtown had an NFL player in the past and some College gridiron player came out a few years ago and couldn’t even crack the QLD Cup.

AFL really is a skill-less sport played by clones of Scotty Minto. They can say what they want but the facts are not going to change.

We don't need to do this. Unlikely in the extreme as well, as he would most likely have to take a big pay cut

its just insane he would be even talking about this when he shoudl be talking about origin. Any way an AFL player attempting League would be like a basketballer attermpting AFL, its not just the skills transfer, there's seriously 3-5 years of strength development that would have to take place before the player wasnt snapped like a twig. You cant gain the strength and power you need for league overnight.

Ahh yes, forgot about that.

Regularly getting beaten by amateur Gaelic footballers, guys who spend 5 days a week as plumbers compared to the AFL millionaires. The only way the AFL team managed to jag a win was to coat-hanger/ cheap-shot the Irish guys.

They basically did to Ireland what England did to us with Bodyline yet for some reason the Melbourne press had no issue with it and actually took aim at the Irish when they cancelled future series because of the AFL’s thuggery. Really makes you wonder about the sporting culture in the AFL.

The only aussie rules player that ever struck me as capable in Rugby League is Andrew McCleod. He was a very balanced runner and one of the few in that mob that dispayed any skill level. He always seemed to have more time than those around him. A possible centre or winger maybe

No aussie rules player could ever seriously be considered as a Rugby League forward. Their bones would shatter.

Ireland's captain and highest pointscorer is an accountant
Another one of their squad is a High School Science Teacher
Another one hurls during his free time
Another is a uni student
Another is another accountant
Another is a uni student training to be a PE Teacher

He grew up playing RL and it remains his favourite sport to watch on the television. No joke. I think he is originally from Darwin which is split between the two codes.

Good evening and welcome to tonights AFL lovers thread on League Unlimited. We hope you enjoy this discussion, brought to you by those friendly people at the Kensington Methodone Clinic.

In tonights edition, we take yet another look at how AFL continues to infiltrate Rugby League discussion with its well orchestrated purchase of two of Rugby Leagues thickest for a squillion dollars, backed up by ridiculous articles about them from every conceivable angle possible.

Stay tuned folkes as the great bastion of all things NRL - the mighty LU, slowly becomes AFLU...............

Meanwhile, 2 Origin sides have been announced.

Mods - you have been great lately in keeping this crud removed from the NRL forum. In keeping with that theme, please - this thread  AFL forum, fight club or  the shitter where it belongs.

Macca could easily have played league and did right up until he was drafted to the AFL. Jock, his brother was also pretty reasonable at both sports.

Matty Whelan, who played for Melb, also played a lot of league as a youngster.

Lots of the blackfellas up this way play both, but they are generally too light for NRL. they are built like whippets, and they hurt to hit because they are hard and bony, but too light for the NRL.

The AFL here also have a much better system to get kids up to AFL level. the junior programs are at a different level and even up to seniors. the NT Thunder give people a pathway all the way up and blokes have already been taken from there. by comparison the NTRL get SFA support from the ARL/NRL. It's a joke. the NTRL here are in all sorts of trouble and need to be bailed out by the ARL.

and yes, there are some AFL players that could cross to league and probably go OK. these guys have significant ball skills and great vision (AFL is 360 degree game). i suspect mostly as outside backs. need a yr or 2 to change their body shape as do league players going the other way.

The simple facts are these.
1. An NRL player has played at the top level of AFL.
2.NO AFL player has ever played at the top level of the NRL.
Shows which sport is easier.

The issue isn't whether they have the skills or not, i'm sure they can pass a football. You mention vision, but all the AFL vision in the world won't help them in RL. Andrew Johns had great vision, doesn't mean he'd make a good AFL player.

Absolutely nfi
