the CSDJRL lost 500 kids from last year. 500.

It's hardly earth shattering to believe soccer is "bigger" than league. If you are taking player numbers, it's a fact.

With regards to your son, sign him up. Mini league is played under a safe play code and is a million miles away from the NRL that you see on TV. It's completely safe until the age of about 13.

Thanks Newman. Yes, you don't need to convince me, it's my wife that will struggle with it. But I think ultimately it will be up to him. If he wants to play, I'm happy. Only way he will find out is to play.

500 in one year? Daaaaaaaaamn

Has that been a growing trend over the years and spiked? Or is it completely reactionary to something like last years Origin.

Gymea yes. Aquinas to a lesser extent but a tier down and Engadine no.

Make no mistake, De La and Gymea have developed into super clubs and run the JRL. It is to the detriment of every other club because as these two clubs get bigger they will absorb more and more kids and clubs like Kurnell, St Joeys, Sutho and St Pats will be swept aside. There is already talk of Bosco, St Pats and Joeys joining up to form an ''all saints'' as they simply cannot compete at the moment. De La and Gymea will be victims of their own success and strength and it wont be long until Cronulla Junior League is forced to merge with another competition, likely Illawarra.

The junior league has a lot to answer for. The league is very poorly managed. The U/17s is already merged with the Illawarra comp. U/19s has 5 teams in it and were almost going to merge with the Illawarra comp. 1st grade, 2nd grade & 3rd grade all only have 6 teams in each comp. I agree with you that if it keeps going the way it does we will merge with another comp. The senior club should make it priority to help fix this up otherwise there will be no junior nursery. Although they don't use it anyway so they probably don't care.

2014 numbers - Top 5 Clubs

Dela 44 teams
Gymea 36
Engadine 33
Aquinas 25
Como 24
Cronulla Caringbah 23

Dela & Gymea have increased their numbers dramatically in the last 5 years but that's because of the atmosphere they have provided around their clubs.
Unfortunately my club Cronulla Caringbah has suffered a bit this year and a lot has to do with the development. People don't know we exist anymore.

Cronulla Caringbah 22 sides because the 14bs folded last night. 2 of those sides 15's and 13 bs are merger sides too, with taren point and Kurnell respectively so there's really only 20 sides, which is down from 30 odd last year.

Hopefully once their new complex is complete, they will thrive for numbers.
