In support of Women in League sending 17 vaginas out onto the field.

Bravo.

Now that Women in League round is here, and you can finally get that of your system, it's time to crawl back in to your hole. Off you go, crawl away.

On the issue of women in league, the game has almost completely failed to get girls and women involved in the playing side of the game, which is a major weakness.

I had the misfortune to see a schoolgirls rugby union gala day this week and these girls were dead keen on playing union but had no freakin idea about the rules. It was a mess, especially at the ruck. Were they able to get up and play the ball it would have worked so much better and they would have bene able to understand the rules better. So why then were they playing union and not league? Because no one in RL has the foresight to actively encourage girls over the age of 12 from playing the sport.

When it comes to women in RL all our efforts are completely patronising. It's all about being a parent of a boy who plays, working in the canteen or being a club secretary or registrar. Or it's just a reactinary effort to counter some horrific sex scandal. It's embarrassing. Other traditional male sports are actually treating women and girls as legitimate and valued participants in the sport, not just using them to fill auxillary roles in a patrinising "know your place" kind of way. RL needs to change its attitude to women and girls and their involvement in the game and significantly increase its efforts to provide playing options for women and girls who want to get involved. To pretend they don't want to play, or snigger at the idea is insulting and backward.

Geez I dunno mate, I think womens rugby league is going OK.
I dont have to look far to find it.
A mate at work coaches a female team in group 6 that is participating in exhibition on Fri night at Kogarah
Another mates team of girls just won their div in the State Championships at Cabra recently.
Both have had problems recruiting players.

I know there are examples of women and girls playing the game. I know there are probably even a few success stories here and there. In fact I know the ARL and other development bodies have started to take it a bit more seriously in some areas. But overall there has been very little done to really encourage and grow this area. Certainly not enough.

Union is way ahead of us and that just should not be the case in Australia. We totally dominate union in virtually every sphere, except maybe in the elite private school system. What frustrates me most is knowing that the simpler rules should actually make it much easier for women, especially younger girls who may be less familar with either code, to play league compared to union. Yet it's not happening. And I fear we've missed the boat, as usual. Union 7s is now an Olympic sport for men and women and that will only further strengthen women's union. And it's not just union. There has been huge growth in womens soccer and cricket in recent years too and those sports saw that potential and have really worked hard to take advantage of it. I know the physicality of RL might make it a bit harder for us to follow suit but the fact that union is able to attract good numbers suggests that is not a major hurdle. Womens and girls RL should have been targeted some time ago and more done to foster it.

Of course a large part of the blame can be directed at the overall lack of leadership and foresight of the entire RL administration and all the conflicts of interest and selfishness that hampers the game at every level. But even with all the problems we have we still could have done a lot more, and can still do a lot more in the future. Patronising efforts like the women in league weekend, fronted by known wife beaters, and highlighting the work of canteen mums and the like really aren't good enough if we're fair dinkum about being inclusive and respectful of women and their rights and role in the game.

This is sexist probably, and I don't care, I have no interest in any facet of women playing rugby league.

Looks like the same 17 vaginas that toweled up the cheats a few weeks back.
