NRL to ditch digital arm

NRL scales back digital arm following broadcaster pressure

By Zoe Samios

October 6, 2021 — 3.53pm

The National Rugby League has bowed to pressure from its media partners and decided to scale down its digital content arm in a move that is expected to result in several redundancies at the organisation.

The shift, led by the NRL’s recently appointed chief customer and digital officer Alexi Baker, is part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations at the NRL to save costs and better serve fans. But it will also be considered a win for the company’s two media partners - Nine Entertainment Co and News Corp Foxtel - which have long expressed frustration about the division and argue the NRL’s own website competes with their digital properties.

Staff at the NRL were informed about the change on Wednesday afternoon and about 10 redundancies are expected to take place over the next few weeks. Staff who appeared at the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said they were not given the opportunity to ask questions.

Under the plans the NRL will move away from creating news-focused content and work more closely with Nine (which is the owner of this masthead) and News Corp-controlled Foxtel on joint projects. The NRL website will mainly feature highlights and short-form videos that entertain fans instead of breaking news. The NRL was approached for comment but did not respond by deadline.

The NRL Digital Network officially launched in 2018 after the organisation took control of its digital assets from Telstra, an arrangement formed under the terms of its $1 billion broadcasting rights deal with Nine and Foxtel. The deal was a significant change in strategy for the NRL and involved the clubs investing money in digital rather than outsourcing it to media partners.

The network is currently made up of five parts including NRL.com, and sites and apps for the competition’s 16 teams. As of last year, the digital unit employed about 80 staff, including a product and technology arm with designers, developers and engineers who ensure the digital products work for fans. It has a media services division which handles game archives and images taken at matches, digital marketing and social media, a data and insights team, and employs about eight journalists who cover matches and interview players and coaches.

This is the first major change for NRL digital division since the arrival of Ms Baker (who previously led negotiations at Nine), who has undertaken a review of the organisation’s media arm. In late August, the NRL notified high-profile ex players and coaches such as Jamie Soward, Brett Kimmorley, Anthony Seibold and Robbie Farah that the website would no longer feature panel shows.

The restructure comes as the NRL prepares to propose the Redcliffe Dolphins as the expansion team for 2023 after agreeing to a deal with News Corp to inject at least $75 million into the sport over five years. Sources with knowledge of discussions told the Herald earlier this week that the NRL is providing the News Corp-owned Brisbane Broncos will an increase in exclusive matches, which will ultimately reduce the number of free-to-air games.

The NRL is presenting to the 16 clubs on Thursday and will provide them with details on how they plan to finance a 17th team. Any savings generated by the NRL could help with the justification of a new team.

How many people on here have actually watched a program on NRL.com or in General for that matter? I would like to see ratings of these said programs I doubt they even rate a mention in the grand scheme of things

RL panel shows are awful. Pre game shows similar very painful

This is a terrible decision.

The NFL controls all its content and NFL.com is great.

The NRL should be copying them.

Also has a lot of content behind a paywall which doesn't work for our small market

What were the ratings on Kayo four years ago?

Or Disney Plus two years ago?

So all this big stink because Jamie headgear being given heave ho, and his sidekick Ex Bronco coach Seinothing
Is the 'Website disappearing" ah No
Are they going to replays, highlights? Yes
Do they now have better info than the 'papers', my opinion No
Eg wanted to know why Mansuar was not on the wing for Souths- found, by search by Seven sports News.com
I don't I read anything on the website- perversely because not enough histories and hookers and blow. Content usually boring.

So the old line by Masters that it's worth a billion, i don't know why he didn't say a gazrillion. It's so far off as a figure on how this website operates , you be lucky to pick up 40m on sale as is. It's properly no revenue positive.

Hold your horses, IF say Nine don't bid or win the bid , we can still go back to that winning formula of jouno's of headgear and someone hurt my family, hacks.
If it was to be a hit it needs to have live games professional done, not like their trial games efforts- which were nothing short of shit.
So if Nine falls out AND it is Nine that is doing the push to slightly reduce the content- the NRL we be in a position to 'restore' the content. If a pay per view live games, then this website would be rocking. But seriously people like Perth red will be out with his calculators, however thier is already a pay per view site called Kayo which has lots of other content like the NFL which to me justifies paying for. I will say this if the NRL don't get a free to air sponsor it will die a slow death. So create new content and have that as your live games on NRL.COM

What would Kayo's rating be if the only program was a one hour review of the week's games? Kayo works because it is across a wide range of sports both live games and Panel shows.

So to Disney+. It is a Multi national companies with hours and hours of stuff. Yet it doesn't have it's own content from ESPN on it. For various reasons

I am a RL fan. I have Kayo because of several sports but no way I would pay just for a single sport like RL. Like right now what would I watch? So it isn't viable

So can someone tell me what the long term plan is for this sport?
Just keep leaving yourself at the mercy of these dying media groups for TV money every 5 years?

The NRL can never seem to acquire any money or assets either as whenever there is a modest profit made the clubs have their hand out..

You gotta wonder where this game is heading…

I only watch two sports RL and F1 so for me Id happily pay for a stand alone service for both sports rather than give News ltd my money. What would I watch now? Well ideally Id be settling down to enjoy a full international program for the next 8 weeks followed by games from the French competition. If I wasn't on the cheap Kayo Telstra deal I'd cancel it now until March and pick up my F1 somewhere else.

in 2019n the Digital arm brought in $24mill. Up $18mill from just a couple of years before. The value is in its future potential given where we know media consumption is heading. Even if NRl decides never to produce and sell its own content , the ability to do so will keep the b'stards honest!

None because I have Kayo and watch their shows, but if there wasn't any on Kayo then I'd obviously be buying and watching the streaming channel that has all the content. The 2 million subscribers to NRL.com shows its reach and advertising value, hence why revenue has quadrupled in space of a couple of years.

I do intend to watch 'the season' doco and the classic matches on there during the off season.

No one watches these shows, Yet it is some tragedy that they aren't going to be online next year.

The fact no one watches is likely the real reason they are being dropped
