NRL to trial three-dimensional broadcasts
CHRIS BARRETT
February 12, 2010

The NRL will become the first organisation in Australia to introduce revolutionary three-dimensional sports coverage, after revealing plans to trial live broadcast sites in Sydney this season.

Less than a fortnight after the 3D technology was unveiled for an English Premier League game between Arsenal and Manchester United, the NRL has moved to take advantage of the revolutionary technology.

David Gallop, the code's chief executive officer, has held discussions with the game's broadcasters about filming select games in 3D format and showing them at sites in the city, such as theatres and parks, this year.

It is understood that Foxtel, rather than the NRL's other broadcast partner Channel Nine, would be the likely provider of the coverage, although Gallop would not confirm their involvement. The pay TV network has an active program for 3D broadcasting in its engineering development labs and has made no secret of its plans to introduce test broadcasts to subscribers with 3D televisions by next year.

"We've already talked to the broadcasters about the possibility of some use of live sites during the season," Gallop told the Herald. "We've talked about doing it for select games. They're interested, for sure."

Gallop would not say how many games would be chosen to receive the 3D treatment or whether they would be the standout fixtures on the rugby league calendar such as the State of Origin series or the NRL grand final. However, he said the game screenings would be open to the general public, with a site such as Darling Harbour a leading candidate for fans to view matches like never before through 3D glasses.

The presence on the NRL board of Katie Page, the managing director of electronics retail giant Harvey Norman, had been instrumental in allowing rugby league to get a step ahead of the pack in terms of 3D development, Gallop said.

"It's one of those situations where one of your board members can give you a unique insight into the new technology," Gallop said. "Obviously with Katie Page on our board we've talked to her about the introduction of 3D through retail."

The launch of 3D TV sets into Australian stores is not due until midyear but the format, which has received a monumental publicity surge with the release last December of James Cameron's film Avatar, is widely regarded as central to the future of sports coverage. Already ESPN has declared itself as a leading player by announcing it will launch of a 3D sports network in the US in June, beginning with the broadcast of 25 matches from the World Cup in South Africa. Lalit Modi, the commissioner of the Indian Premier League, has also stated elements of this season's Twenty20 tournament will be broadcast in 3D.

Gallop says the fast-moving, impact-heavy character of rugby league is ideally suited to 3D and has indicated the technology could well work in the code's favour when it comes to negotiate a new TV-rights deal. The NRL's six-year, $500 million deal expires at the end of 2012.

"Anything that enhances the viewers' enjoyment is going to have a value attributed to it," Gallop said. "That could be lucrative for us in terms of TV rights. Rugby league is already uniquely suited to television because of the position of the ball and the players, so it's likely that 3D would make it an even more compelling TV product."

While the NRL is setting the example in Australia, other codes are already paving the way overseas. Sky's historic 3D broadcast of the match between Arsenal and Manchester United from Emirates Stadium on January 31 attracted more than 3000 spectacled fans to nine pubs around Britain and left fans raving about its quality.

That was followed last weekend by the presentation of the Six Nations rugby union match between England and Wales to 900 paying viewers at 40 cinemas in Britain. ESPN and Fox have been testing 3D coverage since 2008 and NBA and NFL games have previously been broadcast in theatres in the US.

i couldnt imagine Ch9 having the infastructure to support 3D TV over the air waves. ESPN and Sky are both Pay TV and i get the feeling 3D tv wont be FTA.

Foxtel with cable could pull it of pretty easily in regards to bandwidth

Id say the vast majority of Foxtel subscribers aren't on cable anymore.

Isn't it more to do with the equipment recieving the "signal".

It took about 8 years for HDTV to really become affordable, if 3D TV's are priced at $8 to 10 K like HD was intially than I see a slow takeup again.

OK then but even Satellite is still better then an aerial....

The biggest issue for FTA is the $$$$ for 3D technology from the ground level in cameras to the trucks tucked under the grandstand shooting the feed back to the TV station for broadcast.

I found this article that you may all be intersted in.

Right now, free-to-air TV stations are struggling to hang on to the revenue they are generating via free-to-air advertising, and next year this will come under further threat as Internet-based content services are rolled out in Australia.

For networks to deliver the AFL or NRL Grand finals, they are going to have to invest millions in new production gear to make 3D happen, and when they do the experience is not necessarily better than a current 2D experience.
Last year in the USA I watched an NRL game on a 3D TV and, after 15 minutes of viewing, I found that it was not a good TV experience. The players looked like they were characters out of a console game and the fact that the images were 3D did not in any way enhance my viewing experience.

I for one will be holding on my HDTV for another 4 years...

I dont understand this new found fascination with 3D. It bugs the shirt outta me. 3/4 of the screen is out of focus, you have to look at what the director/producers want you to see. IMO it would be horrible to watch sport in 3D. I spend a large amount of a footy game watching what the offensive & defensive lines are doing, looking for holes, overlaps etc not just watching the ball for the whole 80mins. You wouldnt be able to do this in 3D as anything that is not in centre screen would not be in focus. I'll be spending my money on a 1080i projector, you can keep your overpriced 3D fad.

What a load of absolute crap. technolgy is not driven by what Harvey norman may or may not sell. Technolgy is market driven. The technology is over 5 decades old. The R&D that goes into this by News Limited corporations, such as BSKYB, is massive. Fox Sports follows through from Bsky, whatever they do, as long s it makes commercial sense.
Does David Gallop believe that Australians are unable to get the same TV's the Poms just watched 3d soccer on? How deluded & out of touch is he with technolgy?
Why does he insist on continually blowing up Katie Pages skirt? Hopefully she wont be part of the IC.

What would be really cool is for them to broadcast SOO and the GF in 3D live into cinemas. Imagine a cinema packed with RL fans watching SOO or the GF in 3D!

That article is rubbish, particularly the part you quoted. For a start, the NRL match that the author watched wasn't shot with 3D cameras, so even if it was watched on 3D capable TV, it doesn't mean the match was in 3D.

In fact, I'd question whether it happened at all given that no networks have broadcast any sports in 3D at all in the US yet - the Man Utd vs Arsenal match was the first ever sporting event to be broadcast in 3D.

ummm my input revolved around who would broadcast the game - Fox or Ch9... how the game looked i didnt really give a f**k about or comment on!

I'm completly confused by all this. How exactly does 3D Sport on TV work? I haven't seen Avatar so I'm not sure if that would help explain it, but I have seen other 3D shows and the only reason they are entertaining is because the content is designed specifically to make it look like it's going to hit you (ie someone throwing a ball or something) - I can't see how the cameras would be able to make it look any better unless they were able to get the camera at the exact right angle, at the exact right moment for a pass to be thrown or what not.

do yourself a favour and go and see Avatar, takes 3D to a whole new level. Instead of the gimmicky things flying out to hit you it actually gives deep perspective to the entire shot. Hard to explain, just go and see it!

How about they trial some two dimensional broadcasts first? There's been a lot of talk of some sort of All Star game being played this weekend but I can see no evidence of any such game existing when looking over the TV guides for both Channel 9 and Fox Sports...
