NRL to trial three-dimensional broadcasts

Id say the vast majority of Foxtel subscribers aren't on cable anymore.

Isn't it more to do with the equipment recieving the "signal".

It took about 8 years for HDTV to really become affordable, if 3D TV's are priced at $8 to 10 K like HD was intially than I see a slow takeup again.

No 3d requires double the bandwidth of regular TV. The frame rate is twice as fast, and the images between your left and right eyes alternate each frame, its so quick that the human brain doesnt recognise it and as a result gives you that 3d image. You can do 3d on high end non-3d LCD/LED tv's now (ie a 100-200mHz TV), it just isn't as good.

Foxtel and FTA both broadcast in 1080i, so there'd be a bandwidth upgrade required either way. As far as I know FTA only broadcasts in 1080i because full 1080p filming equipment was so expensive at the time. I'm pretty sure they have the bandwidth available to them in their spectrum if needed. Foxtel obviously has room to spare.

Given they're talking about broadcasting in parks and theaters, I'd say most of this discussion would be irrelevant anyway, as they'll have a separate connection compared to your average punter.

How about they trial some two dimensional broadcasts first? There's been a lot of talk of some sort of All Star game being played this weekend but I can see no evidence of any such game existing when looking over the TV guides for both Channel 9 and Fox Sports...

You need to look harder. Not sure where you are so can't comment on Channel 9, but if you had been looking at the Fox Sports guide you would have seen the following:

Fox Sports 2: 9:30pm Saturday, NRL All Stars

Nice to know, but my point about Foxtel subscribers and cable still is valid.

I would doubt that more than 10% of all Pay TV customers are on "Cable" these days.

Whether they're on cable or Satellite is irrelevant, both have similar bandwidth in regards to their ability to broadcast HD. The only difference is Satellite is one way, while Cable is bi-directional, and I think you'll find the figure is alot higher than "10%" for places like metro sydney.

do yourself a favour and go and see Avatar, takes 3D to a whole new level. Instead of the gimmicky things flying out to hit you it actually gives deep perspective to the entire shot. Hard to explain, just go and see it!

Hmm, fair enough, but I think I'd be doing myself more of a favour by not watching Avatar - I hate that airy-fairy fantasy crap.

Nine Melbourne are showing Winter Olympics highlights all night. No NRL replay scheduled at all, not even in the usual 1am timeslot.

Thanks for the heads up on the Fox telecast, though, it must've been a late change because it didn't appear in the early printed guides

Brace for Origin to hit in 3D
CHRIS BARRETT
February 13, 2010

THE National Rugby League and Channel Nine intend to use this year's State of Origin series as the launch pad for three-dimensional television coverage of sport in Australia.

As revealed in the Herald yesterday, the NRL is positioning itself as the first football code in the country to be filmed in 3D format, which is tipped to revolutionise the broadcasting of sport.

Discussions between the NRL chief executive, David Gallop, and Nine's chief executive, David Gyngell, have earmarked a match during this year's Origin series as the trial event.

The plan is for giant TV screens to be erected in public sites across the city that is not hosting the particular Origin match. ''The number of viewers would be limited but they would be part of something historic in the coverage of sport,'' Mr Gallop said. ''Imagine seeing Billy Slater fend off someone at top pace in 3D.''

The first and third matches of the series will be held at ANZ Stadium at Homebush on May 26 and July 7, with the second game in Brisbane on June 16.

Mr Gallop said cinemas, hotels and parks were being considered as potential venues to host the initial trial broadcast. In the past fortnight in Britain a Premier League soccer match and a Six Nations rugby game were shown in 3D at pubs and theatres respectively.

Like the experimental broadcasts in Britain it is understood fans would buy tickets to attend the screenings and would be given 3D glasses.

The entry of 3D sports coverage into TV at home is likely to be a longer process despite the fact that 3D TV sets will be available in Australia by April.

The United States has also conducted tests of 3D broadcasts in public settings.

The American network ESPN is launching a 3D sports network in June, beginning with the broadcast of 25 World Cup football games.

But industry observers here say that the costs associated with filming and producing events in the format will mean delays here.

Pay television provider Foxtel is working to enable 3D coverage by next year but will not be in a position by June to screen footage filmed by ESPN of the World Cup and other select matches.
