NRL Weekend Vs NFL Sunday

Having lived in North America for a while, NFL on Sundays is like nothing else. I lived on the west coast which is three hours behind the east coast so by 9am in the west, you have all the east coast games starting, then you have the central games and then the west coast games plus sunday night football. You literally get 12 hours of football back to back which is superb for the average sports fan. I'd move back there just for the NFL season.

Funny how some of you guys discuss the NFL like you know it inside out. The NFL is so entirely a one off, that no other nation on earth could be able to accommodate the way the NFL is run. There are so many factors which allow the NFL to be what it is, none of which are present in Australia.

To a point but it is without doubt the best run sporting competition in the world hands down.

There is still a lot we can learn from the NFL with regards to marketing, merchandising, advertising etc.

Winning a 32 team competition is truly an awesome achievement IMO.

There is nothing rugby league, rugby union, soccer, or Aussie rules can learn from the way NFL is marketed. Thats why I said its so unique in its nature that its impossible to replicate. You have an administration which has successful pitted all the major 4 network (while also having your own 5th channel) against eachother to bid for the rights. Its incomprehensible here.
You have collective bargaining....once again, I'd love to see that happen here, but the reality is its just not gonna happen. You have blackouts, you have scenarios where building new stadiums is a key keeping your license (but it will also help you), you have exclusivity over 1 million people + in some cities, that get to as high as 8 million (Jets and Giants). 8 million people for 2 teams, and in Melbourne and Sydney we have close to 10 for less than half that. Its ridiculous really when you think about it. And you also have a nation of 300 million who generally like the sport - once again, a major difference - more people = more cash to put it simply.

You have an ingrained culture that stems not just from the professional level, down to college and to high school. League heartland? AFL heartland? You guys havent seen Texas! Its scary. And these are just some of the things.

Its so unique, that I dont think we can really copy anything, apart from perhaps a collective bargaining system, where merchandise sales would be spread out evenly regardless of which club sold the most merchandise. We dont really have the luxury of corporate boxes either - man do those rake in a lot.

Anyway, I digress. Its hard to apply their models to Australia.

There are simple things that can be replicated. Merchandise for a start. I wold never be seen dead in most NRL gear but yet I am happy to walk around in my Denver Broncos cap and jumper as they are well made and look professional. I find most NRl merchandise to be sub-standard and tacky.

NRL meerchandise is also cost prohibitive to the average fan with a jersey setting you back $160.00. That is ridiculous but while ever News and Nine have a say in the running of our game, it will always be amateur hour I'm afraid.

I also believe most of the out of Sydney clubs are run much better than those in Sydney. The Broncos, Storm and Titans are to me much slicker outfits than the Panthers, Sharks or Tigers.

I would be filthy if Setanta got their hands on league. $30 for one channel, to watch maybe another 2 games of footy a weekend, thanks, but no thanks.

the nfl plays fourteen games during the day on sunday, one on sunday night and another one on monday night

however:
during week one, they play a kickoff game involving the defending champs
thanksgiving results in two games, now three
the week before the playoffs their is no mon night game

as stated in a previous post the reason for no fri night and sat games is that fri nights is usally for high school football & sat for college football, when the college season is finished some games are moved from sunday to saturday

CBS telecasts the AFC games (7 games a week)
NBC telecasts the sunday night game, the kick off game (1 game a week)
ESPN telecasts monday night football (1 game a week)
Fox telecasts the NFC games (7 game a week)
a select few games each week are also available on the nfl network which telecasts the third thanksgiving game

the superbowl rotates between the four networks

some games are not televised in local regions due to the blackout rule (which means if a game is not sold out within 72 hrs the local city of the home team will recieve no coverge of that or any game at time slot)

with 7 games each on fox & cbs they can switch between games if one becomes a blowout

it should be noted that
cbs & nbc are free to air networks, with fox & espn are cable tv networks
