That's all to it.

If it means we need to reduce sydney clubs to increase the salary cap, than do it.

Merge the clubs below and get the job done;

Penrith and Parramatta = One West Syd Team

Souths, Manly and Roosters = New Sydney Team

St George Illawarra and Sharks = New Southern team

West Tigers and Bulldogs= Inner West Team

Newcastle and Canberra would still be standalone clubs.

We are not losing our topline players to other codes for any other reason. If it means short term pain for long term gain, NRL directors should force mergers. Take some hard action.

nrls biggest problam is that it sells most of its games to its parent company to broadcast.
not exactly getting the cash the afl get yet the ratings are way better.

i have foxtel to watch footy (and other sports)

NRL should petition for a cut of Fox subscriptions in NSW and QLD at least.

Hahaha. So your solution to retaining our players (I assume that's your point) is to DRASTICALLY reduce the opportunities. Lets face it, when its wankers like cutie leaving, do we really need to start axing teams? Didn't think so...

I think we should treat this Chris Sandow fellow like players treat the real Chris Sandow, just brush straight past him.

:sarcasm: We could reduce the number of teams down to one team for each State/Territory ... then maybe we can get teams from neighbouring countries to have teams too. We could start out with 12 teams and eventually expand to 14. EVERY WEEKEND WOULD BE LIKE ORIGIN!!!! :sarcasm:

Works for Union, right?

They have more money to spend on less players ... but is it a better game to watch (subjective question perhaps pointlessly asked in a League forum)?

Perhaps more scientifically - does it get better ratings?

Most importantly - would this really make League better?

Hunt going to AFL is like David Beckham being signed to a Gridiron team in the US ... League and AFL are totally different games. The AFL is motivated by attracting publicity and Hunt is motivated by the dollars.

It won't achieve anything and ultimately it won't matter ... for fans of either game. We should all just put it behind us and stop worrying about it.

In closing, I agree that League could and should improve its earning potential ... starting with, as others have posted, getting a fair television deal. Reducing the number of Sydney teams slightly might also play a role, but obviously risks alienating a massive number of fans so should be managed very, very carefully.

I don't see how any of this would have stopped Hunt leaving. He's getting $1,000,000+ a year, doesn't have to play first grade next year and they don't really expect anything of him. It's a publicity stunt, there's no way the NRL would match the amount he's getting because he just isn't worth it.

I agree about the TV rights having to increase. For the amount that Nine and especially Fox are getting from the NRL they really are paying a pitance. But there's no point cutting clubs because that will just reduce the amount of hardcore fans.

When the Roosters only get $800,000 from their major sponsor, but Essendon get $2.5 million from theirs, that is a major issue.

The problem is Samsung sponsor them both, and give the Roosters a third of what they give Essendon for essentially the same thing.

Rugby Union tried something like this in the ARC. Making up teams, transplanting teams from traditional clubs and creating fantastic new clubs called Sydney Fleet, West Sydney Rams, Coast Stingers.... and then it flopped when no one supported it, when no one had an affinity for the jerseys worn on the field. Talk about giving AFL a head start, rip apart the traditions of the game and you hand it to every other code on a plastic plate. Forced mergers do not work. Mergers only work when both clubs involved benefit and when the fans are at least okay with it. This suggestion has been made by someone who sounds completely out of touch with what makes the game successful, and someone who is out of sync with why league has dominated the two states which comprise of half of this nations population.

I would like to see West Tigers and Bulldogs as the southwest Sydney team. With headquaters in Liverpool.
