NSW based clubs banned from linking with Qld Cup

THE exodus of NRL feeder sides to Queensland will be blocked from next season. The NSWRL and QRL have reached an agreement to cease dual registrations, which has allowed Canberra and Manly to abandon the NSW Cup and field their reserve grade sides in Queensland. It is understood Penrith was considering a similar move in 2010. Realising the competition would come under threat of collapse if it lost another NSW-based club, the NSWRL upped talks with Queensland to safeguard second-tier league south of the Tweed.

So this will mean clubs like Canberra and Manly could be fielding sides back in NSW Cup next season.

The knights might come back in too but the player placement program with the Real NRL has been pretty successful.

doesnt mean that canberra and manly are coming back to the nsw cup, it just means from now on that nsw clubs can put their feeder club in the q cup

I dont understand this "dual registration" thing. If Manly and Canberra are only in NRL and Toyota Cup, doesnt that mean that none of their players would be registered with the NSWRL.

It's meant to mean the exact opposite.

But it only works if all NSW-based NRL clubs must have players registered by the NSWRL... so presumably that's how it still works - otherwise if a club wanted to have a feeder club in the QCup then they could just register all their players with the QRL only to get around this ban on dual registration.

But it doesn't neccessarily mean they'll come back - they could choose to put their fringe players in a local CRL competition (unless that requires another registration with the CRL) or even their own A-Grade comp...

sea eagles in the local manly a-grade comp stroke of genius if ever i saw one

As an Eels fan I'd love to see it...

There was talk a while ago that they were considering a Joint-Venture with Mounties for the NSW Cup. Mounties own one of their major sponsors (a club at Harbord)... we might see them go down that path.

Manly and Canberra prop those clubs up. If they're going to boot them , there's a chance Logan and the Sunshine Coast won't have representation in the state league. An absolute truckload of quality is coming out of Logan these days and there's 300,000 people and a potential future NRL franchise on the Sunshine Coast. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Maybe if the NSWRL could organise a piss up in a brewery this would never have happened.

Maybe if the NSWRL wasn't sh*t, these clubs wouldn't feel the need to link up with Q Cup teams to get their reserves a decent game.

But no, lets not fix the problem, just make it hard for clubs to use better alternatives.

FFS, what do all the clowns and hangers on at the NSWRL actually do to earn their salaries and directors fees?

I think the potential mounties involvement with Manly had nothing to do with football. The Herald reported a few months ago that mounties were on the verge of buying the Manly Leagues Club last year but did not carry through with the deal.

This is a good point and another reason why Queensland clearly needs another NRL side. As much as my heart says "WA Reds" the fourth Qld franchise is essential.

Maybe if the NSWRL could organise a piss up in a brewery this would never have happened.

Aside from some scheduling issues I don't see what else is wrong with the comp or what else the NSWRL is meant to do to please NRL coaches. I'd like to see them put a bit more effort into promotion of the competition but that has nothing to do with coaches not wanting to put their fringe players into the NSW Cup.

Fair enough. But it's not a bad idea.

There is one reason and one reason only that NSW clubs look to QLD. It is cheaper. That's it. It's nothing to do with some myth of better quality North of the Tweed. The clubs save between 250-500k a year by sending their fringe players to QLD.

That's not to defend the NSWRL - they don't deserve it, but that isn't the reason why Canberra, Manly and Newcastle don't field NSW Cup teams.

It sounds Harsh on Manly as I thought they basically created the Sunshine Coast franchise.

Brisbane desperately needs a second Brisbane team.

Why does Brisbane have the Gold Coast based Burleigh as one of their affiliation teams?

Still works out much much cheaper than having a whole side for these guys to play in.

We are looking to be a feeder side if we move up to the NSW cup next year so this could be good news for us!

You can easily save $15-30k on medical insurance, another $10k on doctors fees and other medical expenses, $50-$100k on coaching and support staff and $20-30k on uniforms and training gear. That's before you even start paying for the players in the squad over the guys these teams are sending to QLD. All of these costs are being covered by the QLD club and more than outweigh the costs of accomodation and flights to the NRL side.

That said Manly and Canberra are only up there because a suitable alternative couldn't be found closer to home. Most of Canberra's excess would be running around for Wests if that deal had come off and Manly were apparently talking to Mounties.

Turning out a side isn't cheap which is why only Cronulla are still running their own NSW Cup side, and they wouldn't be if the Cobras hadn't fallen in a heap. They will be looking for a partner for 2010 without question seeing as how their finances look.
