Tigers shake off plucky Roos out at Campbelltown

27/05/2013 3:30:00 PM

The Wests Tigers recovered from a second half slump to record a 39-26 win over the Wyong Roos at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

The Roos caught the Tigers on the hop to be first on the board after five minutes of play through winger Allen Malau finishing off a great backline movement to score in the left hand corner. Five eighth Matt Nelson didn’t convert to lead 4-0.

The Tigers replied 10 minutes later when rampaging winger Taqele Naiyaravoro crossed in the left hand corner finishing off a slick backline play after they made huge metres through some dazzling play down the right hand side on the previous ruck. Fullback Sean Meaney wasn’t successful with his first attempt either and scores were level at 4-all.

Halfway through the half Tigers’ centre Josh Davis put them in front crashing over out wide through a gap in the defensive line and Meaney’s conversion took the score to 10-4.

Six minutes later Tigers’ winger Matt Utai crossed near the right hand post for their third try of the match, taking advantage of an overlap to get over then improve the position. Meaney added the extras and the score was 16-4.

With nine minutes to go Wyong halfback Johnathon Ford edged them closer, going over out wide after slicing through from close range and showing strength to carry defenders over the tryline. Nelson converted to make it 16-10.

In the final minute of the half Tigers’ five eighth Eddie Paea scored one of his easiest ever tries under the post after a superbly placed bomb from replacement Sitaleki Akauolo was spilt by the Roos allowing Paea to regather close to the line and plunge over. Meaney had no problem with the conversion and at half time the Tigers were in control at 22-10.

They consolidated their lead two minutes into the second half when Davis crossed over out wide for his second try using a neat dummy to get through a gap and slide over the line. Meaney failed to convert, leaving the score at 26-10.

This seemed to spur the Roos into action, with front rower Magnus Stromquist barging over from close range in the 15th minute and Nelson’s conversion took the score to 26-16.

Nelson then bagged a double for himself in the space of three minutes, firstly backing up Ford who put him through a huge hole then doing all the work himself via a neat left foot step that left defenders in his wake to touch down under the posts. He managed one conversion and in eight minutes the game had gone from “the Tigers by how many?” to an absolute thriller locked up at 26-all.

The next decisive move was executed by Tigers’ front rower Matt Groat, who took advantage of a repeat set in Wyong’s 20m zone to get close to the line and plant the ball one-handed with 11 minutes left on the clock. Meaney converted to put them back in front 32-26.

Four minutes later Tigers’ halfback Luke Brooks made Wyong’s task a little more difficult by slotting a field goal from 25m out in front, extending the lead to 33-26.

Shortly after Brooks virtually assured them of victory after touching down out wide on a loose ball that had been toed through after another Wyong error only 20m out from their own line. Meaney’s conversion took the score to 39-26 and this was the full time result.

This weekend the Tigers will face a tough assignment against the third placed Wolves while the Roos return home to tackle Manly in a bid to get off the bottom of the ladder.

Wests Tigers 39 (T Naiyaravoro 2, J Davis, M Utai, E Paea, M Groat, L Brooks tries; S Meaney 5 goals; L Brooks field goal) def. Wyong Roos 26 (A Malau, J Ford, M Williams, D Phillips, M Nelson tries; M Nelson 3 goals) at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
