NSW forced to defend as our neighbours plot rugby league grand final conversion

Suncorp hosting a GF is stupid for the simple reason that concentration of teams means it's far more likely you'll see a non-local match up (i.e. two teams outside Brisbane) than you would at ANZ (two teams outside Sydney).

You might get lucky every now and again with Brisbane or the Titans in the big one, sure - but what a fizzer if you had something like Canterbury v Parramatta @ Suncorp as a GF...

I disagree. The entire city would embrace the event regardless of who was in it.

And another thing ... Gallop and co. should tell the Victorian government to get f*cked UNLESS they can pressure channel 9 to broadcast games at a reasonable hour AND to give rugby league WAY MORE media time in newspapers and TV into ALL of Victoria.
!

You do realise it is Gallop and co that are responsible for Ch9 not showing RL don't you? What the frick has the vic Govt got to do with it??

re MCG, whilst it is not ideal from a distance point of view it has very steep elevated stands so it actually feels like you are closer to the action the higher you go. With 90,000 in it has a great atmosphere and would do just fine. Not going to happen though for many years.

I like the idea of packaging the GF's so Sydney gets every other. I don't see a problem with Suncorps capacity, 99% of people are watching the game on the TV anyway.

Given the Tasie Govt are paying more than $500k a game for Hawks to play there the NSW govt are getting the GF ridiculously cheap. The interstate visitors alone must be worth millions of $'s income for the state.

Yes I do understand that ... but the government can always lay political pressure on the media. And it is not Gallop and Co who are responsible, it is solely CHANNEL 9 who are responsible. Sure you can blame Gallop for not stating that Ch9 must show games at a reasonable hour but it ultimately falls on Ch9's head and I am certain the Victorian goverment can do something about it ... them or maybe the federal government.

I cant believe the AFL still replays drawn grand finals! Imagine if that actually happened with an event as big as the AFL grand final.

Follow the money every third year or so ... The NRL gf belongs to everyone ... we can have a few decades headstart over AFL at sharing the love of a gf around the country

The AFL GF is far more of an event than the NRL one and Sydney needs to make a greater effort on GF week.
Why? The AFL event is nothing north of Wagga. Or is that your typical Sydney bashing comment?

Sorry, my fault, I was talking about the atmosphere in the city in the lead up to the grand final.
I don't think you realize how big a grand final would be in Brisbane if held here ...
Brisbane has not hosted a game that has gotten much past 6000 if it didn't host a local side, or have some sort of Qld parochialism attached.

ANZ is by far the best venue, compared to Suncorp and the atrociously inadequate MCG, for a raft of reasons.

.
Little to do with Sydney and everything to do with the fact the NRL does not know how to promote itself and Sydney takes having the GF for granted. Presumably you don't watch TV or have never been in Melbourne during AFL GF week?

In fact have you ever been to the MCG? I went to an AFL game where there was 86,000 there. Game was boring as hell but the atmosphere, stadium, facilities, ability to walk to the ground from the Sth bank pubs etc was brilliant.I didn't feel that much further away from the action than at ANZ or Wembley.

The NRL GF is a much better day then what the AFL would be. The AFL's pre-game show looks like the opening ceremony for the genius Olympics with just the one game played, but when your at the NRL GF it's like being at a party with league games being played all day and a rock show before the big one. But your right, the AFL don't have to do a good show or give you value for money because they promote it so much better

If they can't for whatever reason F*CK THEM!

We can't let them mooch off us if they (Victoria as a whole) treats rugby league like sh*t!

Spot on.
This week for instance, you'd barely know a rugby league prelim final is being played in Melb...all the media focus is on the afl gf.

Crap.....been to suncorp to watch Dogs V Cows(dont claim they are local...Townsville is further away from brissy than Sydney)& there was 15,000+ which is comparible with Sydney crowds.

RL grand final in Melbourne:lol: Having lived in Melbourne, and knowing what they are like, nobody would go, if the storm was not in the GF. Therefore relying on interstate supporters to cough up the $ to go. That could be a really big mistake!

Can you imagine if the AFL ever suggested moving their GF to Adelaide or Perth?

I dont have a problem with it going to Brissie every couple of years, I think it would be good for the game - maybe 1 in 3.

No. Sydney Is where the big time Rugby League in Australia was created, and should stay here. There is no way in hell AFL would move their GF to the ANZ or the SCG, nor The Gabba or WACA, so why the hell should we move ours? Also, Suncorp holds 30,000 or there abouts LESS than Sydney. Why should that many people miss out on a GF ticket?

And yet, with the sole exception of the match played during the height of the Super League war, Melbourne has consistently turned up year after year to support big matches between two interstate teams. It's called State of Origin, a game contested by two non Victorian teams - NSW and Queensland. One of those games has managed to set a then Australian record crowd for a League match of 84,000 - and it wasn't even the first Origin match ever held in Melbourne. When it comes to supporting one off big events that do not involve a team from Victoria, Melbourne has already well and truly proved itself.

Can you imagine if the AFL ever suggested moving their GF to Adelaide or Perth?
But League is well known to be the more progressive code, never having to wait for some other code to do something before we consider it. Well, maybe not. But it is surely know as the more inclusive code, never discriminating against fans because they are not privileged enough to live close to the city where the game was introduced to Australia some time before living memory. OK, none out of two - you win. But seriously, what on earth has what the AFL does or doesn't do with its Grand Final got to do with what we do with ours? This isn't a parochial question of state or international borders, or whether some other sporting body is more far sighted or more insular. This is a question about what the NRL and the League community think is best for growing Rugby League and spreading its gospel in Australia and New Zealand. Nothing else is really relevant to the discussion.

Leigh.
