Good to see two anglo kids in Graham and Coote doing well, and in the process proving not all the young guns coming through have to be polynesian or aborignal

NEW South Wales winger Matthew Wright scored a hat-trick tonight as the Blues defeated Queensland 34-12 in the Under 18 match at Suncorp Stadium.

The classy NSW team piled on 22 unanswered points in the second half to record a comprehensive victory.

But the match was delicately poised at the break, with the half-time scoreline of 12-all reflective of the tight opening exchanges.

New South Wales drew first blood in the third minute when a slick backline movement netted a try for the flying Wright.

But Queensland struck back in the 14th minute with a spectacular try. Young Norths Devils winger Ryan Tongia leapt high into the air to secure possession from a kick before offloading a freakish pass to Gerard Beale.

Beale displayed ultra quick reflexes to ground the ball amid a flurry of NSW bodies.

New South Wales dominated the opening stages of the second half, with tries from Lachlan Coote and Mitchel Johnson.

Queensland came close to getting back within striking distance when classy halfback Ben Hunt nearly executed a try from superb chip kick.

NSW made the Maroons pay for the near miss when Wright grabbed his second in the corner with seven minutes remaining.

Wright completed his hat-trick with four minutes remaining.

Queensland prop Josh McGuire was a standout for the home team.

McGuire made a number of bustling hit-ups in an inspirational performance. The home side was also well served by young back-rower Patrick O’Hanlon, who scored Queensland’s second try.

New South Wales 34 (Matthew Wright 3, Lachlan Coote, Albert Kelly, Mitchel Johnson tries; Lachlan Coote 5 goals) def Queensland 12 (Gerard Beale, Patrick O’Hanlon tries; Jordan Rankin 2 goals)

Congratulations to Nathan Massey, who played for the NSW U18 team last night when they defeated Qld in the curtain raiser for State of Origin 2 at Suncorp Stadium. Massey showed his versatility by playing the majority of the game in the unfamiliar role of Hooker. Massey received glowing reports from several well respected judges who were present at the game, confirming the selectors were proven correct by including him in the squad and rewarding him for his remarkable versatility throughout the Junior Reps. Nathan is an exciting prospect, especially considering he was chosen in this team a year young having only turned 17 in April this year.

In further good news for the Bulldogs future, exciting Harold Matthews back rower Lachlan Burr was also outstanding when his NSW U16 team defeated Qld before State of Origin No 1 at ANZ Stadium. In a game that see sawed on the score board, NSW managed to regain their composure after half time and run away with a solid 30 to 16 victory. In a very impressive performance, Lachy displayed all of his exceptional ball skills and great footwork, which we have been well accustomed to seeing this year for the Bulldogs.

All of the above players and many more extremely talented young footballers are signed to the Bulldogs for 2008 and beyond. Everyone from Chairman Dr George Peponis and the Board of Directors, CEO Todd Greenberg and all Development staff are very excited about the future for these young potential Bulldogs first graders.
