Titans aim for the State Cup

JESS WEBSTER | December 18th, 2010

THE Territory could field a side in the NSW State Cup as early as 2012 after the NTRL put forward a proposal to the NSW league last week.
It comes after the NTRL confirmed the Titans would play an exhibition match against Great Britain University on June 29 next year.
NTRL general manager Mike Keech said 2011 was about enhancing the Titans' brand in the hope of entering the NSW State Cup in the next two years.
"In 2012 or 2013 we are looking for the NT to enter out senior Titans side into that competition, which means playing Melbourne, Auckland and a whole range of quality teams," he said, while talks are also taking place for the Titans to play a Papua New Guinea representative side in April.
Palmerston coach Merg Mikaelian will take the coaching reins next year.
NTRL officials will begin talks with the NSW state league in the new year.

Would have prefered they go for QLD Cup but good news they are looking for a step up.

Whilst I agree I would have thought the QLD Cup would have been the logical choice given they also play their 16/18s against the top end of Queensland. But in saying that it would be great to see them enter a team the earlier the better. Using Cronulla as a guideline they only decided to enter a team over Xmas last year and then went out and got players and started training mid Jan, they run their team on a very low budget and still made the eight. So lets hope the NSWRL encourage them to enter ASAP even as early as this year 2011.

As already stated, perhaps the Bundy Red Cup is a better fit for the NT. Perth previously entered at this level and struggled despite Arl support and arguably a stronger local competition.
The Bundy Cup is currently struggling for teams and the Titans inclusion would help boost the comps profile and public awareness.

Cronulla also had a bunch of Nrl standard players to call upon.

I think it's great that they're looking to play interstate, but even if they recruit strongly they'll struggle to match NSW Cup clubs who have the benefit of Nrl players.

In 1991 they played in the Qld State League featuring an aging Les Boyd and went well - they have some quality locals but share many of them with their AFL clubs during the day and their night clubs after hours ... it's a big step up for the lads from the party town.

Any side without any NRL players will find it hard but the more we encourage teams to enter higher standard competitions the better it is for Rugby League. The current 12 teams in NSW Cup would be better off with Canberra and Northern Territory in as well. Whatever the future holds for 2nd tier Rugby League - National Reserve Grade? Joining NSW/QLD Cup? - a strong 2nd tier is essential for Development. The NSWRL, ARL, QRL need to get behind these clubs from these areas and help them with recruitment etc to aid them to become stronger which in turn makes Rugby League stronger.

I see you have not learned anything from the extensive discussion on this matter already.

Will be interesting to see your calls for all the Sydney clubs to be punted that don't put a full team in the NSW Cup, but instead rely on a local leagues club... or your calls to see the Dragons punted when they don't have any link of any sort to a NSW Cup team.

NT have been punted from the CC and MM so that might explain why they are looking at NSW Cup instead of QLD Cup.

I wish the NSW cup wasn't treated as the reserve grade for the NRL... makes it so difficult for new teams hoping to develop players...

It's stinky.
