The Pirtek Parramatta Eels left their run too late in the Toyota Cup, losing 24-18 to the Sharks at Toyota Stadium.
The Eels fought their way back from a 22 point deficit to remain in the hunt heading into the final ten minutes, only to be undone by a passionate defensive effort from the last-placed Sharks.
The win was just the Sharks fourth of the season – and their first since round five – bringing down the curtain on a 13 week winless streak.
The successful return of prop Mitchel Johnson from appendicitis was the only highlight to come for the Eels in a first half that saw them slump to trail 22-nil by the break.
Sharks captain Luke Latham was everywhere for the home side in the opening stanza, laying the platform for halfback Chad Townsend to score and convert for a six-nil lead after 19 minutes.
They’d double the advantage five minutes later, prop Ahmad Allaz barging over to score under the posts.
And when Latham again turned the tables on his former club, scoring the Sharks third try 12 minutes out from half time, the Eels were on the rack at 18-nil down.
Nothing was going right for the Eels, who lost fullback Nathan Gardner just before half time with a hamstring strain.
A further try to second rower Trent Grubb put the Sharks ahead by 22-nil at the break.
Needing to strike early and often in the second half, the Eels got the first part of the equation right when Boyd Brown burrowed over to open the scoring for the visitors.
TK Amosa’s conversion made it 22-6 after 47 minutes.
Rory Brien then crossed two minutes later and the contest was alive with the Eels trailing by less than two converted tries.
The Sharks defence then came to the fore, the Eels unable to draw closer despite having a wealth of possession inside the home side’s 20 metre zone.
A Townsend penalty goal put the Sharks 12 clear at 24-12 with five minutes left to play, however the Eels went the length of the field in two plays for Ryan Morgan to score.
It would prove the final score of the match, the Sharks holding on to take a deserved victory.

Losing Gardner seemingly was a huge loss for the NYC side watching the game yesterday. Jason Baitieri was again in everything, even getting into second receiver a lot in the second half. Both he and Galati were the main instigators in getting us back into the game.

Though they are only coming up from the Ball side, the likes of Terepo and Tuitupou handled the step up when they got their chances. They will hopefully go well next year.

Have been impressed when I have seen the young centre, Rory Brien play over the past few weeks though. Came into the NYC side in round 10 and hasn't missed a game since - has scored some very good tries as well.

Overall though the sooner we see the back of Daisy the better.

Thought that T K Amosa guy really impressed specially in the second half he looked as good or better then Kelly. Bat was solid as usual and looks the goods, the kid is really talented.

Gardner got injured like right in front of me he was making a break and seemingly something pulled and it did not look pleasant at all.

That lanky Blond Winger is horrible, not a fan at all he just seems to be unable to time a run or show any impact.

God the Sharks have a big lanky front rower who is a legit 45 yr old man he is a deadset splitting image of Gareth Ellis (plus ten tears) from the Tigers.

How small is that Joel Latham for a front rower dudes tiny.

defensive line was terrible in the first half, they defend like individuals

came home well but in all honesty we never looked like winning it

It was pathetic! Daisy should never be allowed near a rugby league team ever again after this year!!!

There is PLENTY of talent in that team and the fact they won't make the finals is quite upsetting!

I can't believe the Bears want him!

Peni Terepo (#16 Black & Red headgear). The last 2 games I have seen I am yet to see this guy do anything. Seems very lazy around the ruck. Probably could be alright if someone got a rocket up him!

I find it interesting to compare how last seasons NRL team played compared to this seasons Toyota Cup Team.
In so far as poor defence, a lack of positive attitude, head down, bum up and kick on the sixth tackle and the incredible ability to run into touch early in the tackle count, the teams are incredibly similar.
I believe there is a constant when comparing both teams. Could it be David Fairleigh?
So much talent in that team with so little direction. Will Peter Sharp coach this team next near?

Tell me why again we have left an idiot in charge to possibly wreck young players?

Anderson should have given him the bullet by now, instead he has been left in one of the most important jobs.

I can't believe this stupidity!
Pay him out and get some decent coaching into the kids before the season is out.

Kelly was just non existant yesterday, the sooner we piss this pea heart off the better. And the game plan looked eerily similar to what was dished up by the top side last season.

Matt Cameron will be the NYC coach next season.

Daisy is a blight on the NYC, appalling coach really, pity he didn't take the hint when moved from asst NRL coach, but why would we want to pay the giant nuffy out?

Gee, he is deadset hopeless, good luck Central Coast, I really struggle to understand how he has wraps as a coach, everyone I know who played under him at Newie just don't rate him one bit. Thanks DF and Hages (again)
